in Alaska and in the NW of the US many bars have bells in them.. Has always been a tradition that when a Fisherman had a great day he'd ring the bell at the bar. when you ring the bell in the bar in many of these establishment that says you will buy all in the bar a round.. I'm not sure of the origins of it, but when a fisherman has a good catch he commonly says, 'i rang the bell'..

The reason that the Americans lost the Vietnam was that they spent so much time inventing prostitution, hanging bells in bars, insisting on having fast food all the time, enforcing new customs about tipping.... What else am I missing here that those clever but war-loser Vietnam GIs did?

Oh, porn, I forgot they introduced Asia to porn, Asians had never seen that before, either.

I think you'll find that it's a combination of a few maritime/fishing traditions.

The bell was rang in many fishing villages to signify the succesful return of the fleet and the subsequent revalry when they arrived in port.

A ships master who had a good catch would ring the bell to thank Posiedon (Neptune) for his involvement in their luck and a toast would foillow to the God of the seas. The bell would ring again when a round was bought for the crew in thanks for their efforts.

Bells and ships have a long history and you will be hard pressed to find any tavern near water that doesn't have a bell.

The purpose of the bell was to attract attention, be it the patrons or the Gods, not to signify buying a round. Over time the dissociated events became merged and you have what you see now in many drinking establishments world-wide.

Cheers :gulp: Admiral Ken

Don't forget the drugs - all my mob were terrified to fly with American flight crews and always hoped we had Australian pilots in our Hueys due to LSD flashback problems. :gulp Having said that, we still had a great relationship with our Amercan buddies. :clueless

Very common in the older style bars in the Netherlands well in Amsterdam anyway.

But the older local bar is dying out.

I remember years ago I went ashore in Amsterdam whilst still very naive & called into the first bar in the red light district (Golden Key Bar)

It was Xmas night & the place was packed. I thought the bell was used to attract the barman's attention so I rang it !

There was a slight pause & then a huge cheer went up. Cost me my entire sub money in 5 minutes !

I had no money left so I had no choice but to stay the rest of the night there hoping someone would return the favour.

Luckily most did and I left at 3am in a wheelbarrow, my tour of Amsterdam limited to the 1st bar.

cheers rogero  :hairout

Jeez, how could I forget the drugs? There were no drugs in Thailand before the GIs came.

Do you know the meaning of the word "anyone"?

Lovedog "Okay Piglet, I've promised MM not to be so confrontational with you any more. So instead of lobbing an insult back, I'll answer you serious.."

I can see you're a man of your word.
