I forgot to add the only negative: the ineligibility to join the full members board without having a regular service provider. Some of us are around the world a fair bit and rely on web based email a good deal.

Is there any particular reason for that, most other boards don't seem to be worried about it?

Cheers

I'm glad the Off Topic Section is gone and I hope it never returns..IMHO

Greg,

With the greatest of respect I have great difficulty understanding your position. Why do you hope it never returns ?

If you didn't like its presence then surely the answer was to ignore it. Don't look at it - as is being forced upon you and others now.

I simply cannot for the life of me even begin to comprehend why some would want it banned because they didn't like it. If I don't like something I don't eat it, don't drink it, don't talk to it, don't read it and don't shag it  ;D. But because I don't like LBs I don't say they should be banned - I just stay out of their way.

Furthermore, if you don't care much for the confrontational approach that was prevalent in that section (and I can understand that but, again, don't read it, rather than advocating a banishment order) - has it occurred to you that there will inevitably be a much increased outpouring of vitriol in other sections as a result ? Pete has already moderated one such "frank exchange of views" but it will only get worse.

To me it seems simple - you don't like it, you don't go there. Your world will be a happier place if the arguments are contained.

Cheers

Pie

Mr Pieman,

366 posts and you still havnt figured out that all these whinging anti-OT posters were actually being FORCED to read the OT section OVER AND OVER again by some mysterious alien force.

Like, every time they logged on the board automaticly took them to the OT section (against their free will I might add), and they were compelled to read everything from start to finish.

Its no wonder that so many of the decent and honourable board members wanted it closed! Some of these guys had led fairly sheltered lives up till then and to be exposed to that kind of thing must have been frightening. Its allmost bordering on a safety issue rather than just an ethical one.

I believe these alien dictators implanted a micro-chip in the base of the skull (via the internet), in persons who did not want to veiw the OT pages.

And to make it worse, a lot of inocent victoms had a raging hard on when they logged on and were looking for some relief in the trip reports;-- but what did they get instead ?! No, not some sexy little Thai lady, but rather some anti American nutcase saying some pretty nasty things about the good president. Well that would really send old Mr Willey to jelly, wouldnt it?

So, now I hope you understand why so many people wanted the OT section closed down?

Pieman..

The Off Topic Section did NOT serve it's purpose and at the end there was a security problem from what I understand.  I'd rather see that section closed, than have Pete go to an extreme measure {as he did in the past} and close the entire board down...

A breach of security could be a disaster and Pete's options would then be limited as to how to contain it.

Your solution is an easy one and yes it could be done.

Greggy,

I hope you dont mind me calling you Greggy, its just that  I feel we are like two kindred spirirts adrift on the internet. You can call me Jaffey If you like.

Now down to more serious business!

I can understand where you are coming from about this silly OFF TOPIC rubbish.

I, like you, have never stooped so low as to read such drivvel!  However, from what other people have told me, I believe its so offensive that it should be banned!

I do tell a lie there. Once I accidently stumbled onto the section and allmost had a coronary occlusion trying to find the SHUTDOWN button. But apart from that, I wouldnt look at it.

From what other people have told me about this horrible section, not that I would look at it myself, it was indeed a major threat to security for all of us. In fact if Pete hadnt closed it down when he did, it could have spread to the whole internet and then none of us would be able to use our computers at all. Thanks Pete for saving us. You are my hero [smiley=1luvu.gif].

As I said, I never used to read the OT section, but sometimes when I was just scrolling past it, It just sort of used to jump up on my mouse key and make me read it even though I didnt want to. Iam so glad it gone so now I dont have to go through that trauma again!

Anyway, I have to go now. The Viagra is kicking in and I have to go check out the "trip reports."

PS: Whatever happened to that nice Mr. Valvedoc? He was such a nice man.

Is this the new OT (kids) section ?, all the usual suspects seem to have posted replys, all we need is some words of wisdom from OMJ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Maybe not.

With a bit of luck the playpen will return and you can all carry on the personal abuse and all the other rubbish there, i found some of the threads there very funny so hope PattayaPete will bring it back soon.

  • 9 years later...

Just read this thread through……….

If this is typical, then the quality of posts & posters then is much the same as nowadays. I think it was Shilo who lamented the poverty of current BM's abilities when compared to the posters of the fabled 'Golden Age'.

I thought he may have had a point.

But, Gabor's omnipresence, (fighting Pieman)……..the similar pessimistic outlooks of BMs……. their language…….. the tiffs and insults have convinced me, (to use a well known Thai'ism), its a case of "Same same but ……well…..same"!!

Funny how things never change.

Yup, I remember a poster on a U.S. board moaning in 2002 about how much better Thailand had been for mongers in 1996-2001. He was urging everyone to visit other countries because the prices in BKK and Pattaya had increased and the girls no longer had good attitudes.

During my first visit to Thailand in 1979, I remember guys wailing on the same note. One guy in the coffee shop of the Grace Hotel was angry because some of the girls were expecting cash payment, whereas in the past they had been content with a meal and a bed for the night.

My view is that there is always someone who will say that Asia was better in the old days and is a pale shadow of its past. I first visited in 1996 and heard exactly the same stories. But i had a great time so kind of ignored it.

The main question for a newbie is - do you like the place that you've just discovered? if so, then it means absolutely nothing if someone else considered it better years ago, whether that is true or not. if you like a place in the present day enjoy it.

But beware, because in 10+ years time you may well find yourself lamenting about how things have changed and how they used to be so much better.

I've posted you up Martin, finding a 10 year old post you deserve it.

Rumours of the forums demise are somewhat premature.

ps: Less posts is just a general internet forum thing, not Pattaya or Thailand related, many non LOS forums I use have a lot less posters than Pattayatalk.

I would say that, cheaper, friendlier and more 'honest'.....

But I am a different person too.

You've got it backwards, Gabor. The Thai economy has been advancing for the past 45 years, much to the benefit of the Thai people. Some mongers might want Thailand to revert to as wretched a state as in 1979, but no Thais would, especially not the girls who work in P4P.

This topic is from Feb 2004...forum dying, oh dear.[/quote/]

I suppose it is more accurate that BMs are expiring. It would be interesting to know how many BMs from 2004 are still posting in 2014.
