Hi Odense He works to a budget on a daily basis, worked out to within 50 baht. What he saves one day he puts in a jar and has a blowout at the end of the month. By blowout I mean he has 3k baht in hi

Good for him. Nothing wrong with being economical and haggling is expected generally in Thailand (not so much from drunken sex tourists though). But you are right - on that tight a budget I would rat

If that is 2 eggs what the fuck happened to them ?

Old thread. I wonder how much all the prices at these places have gone up since 2012.

As for cheap places? There used to be a place on Beach Road sort of near Baywatch that had cheap breakfasts. Never ate there, but every morning there were guys in there eating that looked like that's the only place they could afford to eat.

I think Retox baht buster breakfast is still 98 baht. That is amazing value and at least I think it is a good breakfast.

A couple of places on LKM do 99 baht breakfasts, one is opposite the Devils Den which is very good indeed for 99 baht (can't recall the name of the place). Someone did point out to me though (an Expat) that 99 baht a day for a breakfast x 30 days per month is 3k baht per month , or 36k pa! (give or take). He said it eats (pardon the pun) into his monthly food budget.

On my just completed sojourn back in the US, I was rather shocked to see that I spent a little over USD600 in two months at the local Safeway (supermarket) outlets. Able to track it through their afinity program. Not all food items, but still!

$600 in the USA for food for two months? That doesn't sound too bad. I don't even bother to keep track of what I spend. I guess I don't really want to know. It seems like every trip to the grocery store costs at least $40.

Cannot be fun living on that low a budget.

I know that if I finish the Retox 98 baht breakfast I will not have appetite to eat lunch. (And I should) skip dinner or have something light.

However the big sinner on my energy intake in Pattaya is the fact that I like beers and cannot bring myself to replace that with vodka & soda or similar. Not too fond of white wine either but if the bars have a drinkable and somewhat affordable red wine that could be a tolerable choice.

Hi Odense

He works to a budget on a daily basis, worked out to within 50 baht. What he saves one day he puts in a jar and has a blowout at the end of the month. By blowout I mean he has 3k baht in his wallet to spend as he pleases.

He is single, lives in a small rented apartment over on the darkside and spends a majority of his time over there, never leaves a tip and if he's on a night out he'll get loaded on Mekhong an hour before. He gave me a hard time when I tipped my girl 200 baht and he tipped his 20, but I told him it's my money and I'll waste it as I please. The odd thing is that before he moved out there he was a typical 2 week millionaire, fair play to him, he soon switched out of "holiday" mode and into "I'm the cheapest cunt going" mode when he arrived. He did retire 15 years early.

What is quite funny is that his Thai is excellent, almost fluent actually, and he will stand and argue for ages to save a few baht if he thinks he's being hit with the "farang price".

I couldn't retire to live like that, and I'm sure many of us wouldn't, but I've known this guy 30 years and he looks a lot better since he left the UK for LOS, whatever the cost.

But you are right - on that tight a budget I would rather work a ew more years or stay at home and be closer to the family.

To each his own.

  • 2 weeks later...

I posted about this in another thread, but Took Lae Dee on 2nd Road has a 62-baht breakfast special. That has to be among the cheapest for a sit-down restaurant with air-con. I wouldn't want to try it, but apparently quite a few people do, according to a friend.

When I'm shopping at Foodland on Pattaya Klang, I frequently eat at Took la Dee. The specials are ridiculously cheap but they're not bad at all. I've had better eggs benedict there for less than 100 baht than a few of the more touted restaurants on several social media pages.
