Pattaya has launched a major campaign to put the coastal city on the world tourism map and enable it to compete with prestigious destinations like Miami and Nice on the French Riviera within seven years.

At present, Pattaya is positioned as a regional destination and is well known in Southeast Asia, with a reputation on a par with Phuket. Pattaya Mayor Itthiphol Kunplome said that to reach its goal and achieve international standards, the city would need to improve its infrastructure, service quality, convenience and safety.

The strengths of the city are its proximity to airports and Bangkok, as well as its affordability, Itthiphol said.

Yesterday, he announced that the city's look would be modernised. The move is part of a plan to promote Pattaya as having world-class standards. It would no longer be known solely as an entertainment and holiday destination for single tourists, but also as a draw for business and family groups, and those seeking cultural attractions, the mayor said.

Addressing safety concerns, Itthiphol said the city was cooperating with local-government authorities to crack down on crime and illegal business practices.

"There are a lot of attractive places for families, which some tourists may not be aware of. These include luxury accommodations, tasteful food outlets and beautiful islands nearby."

One of the goals of the project is to make Pattaya a "movie city". It is in talks with Universal Studios of the United States to set up production facilities. That deal is expected to be finalised in the next three years.

Pattaya is already a popular place for film shoots. However, its earnings from the motion-picture industry come mainly from spending on hotels and consumption by production crews. Promoting Pattaya as a "movie city" would boost the local economy by introducing facilities for film production, post-production and equipment supply, the mayor said.

However, the city would need to request that the Board of Investment offer tax incentives, especially tax waivers on the import of production equipment, he added.

Last year, 6.7 million tourists visited Pattaya - 70 per cent of them foreigners.

Same shit, different singer

Once they get rid of the jetski scams, the ladyboy pickpockets, beggers, hustlers and other assorted human detritis.

Once they find a better way of getting rid of sewage, other than the system now in place, where turds and sanitary towels/tampons are washed up on the beach, and they rid Walking Street of the smell from the outlet pipe prior to the "stilted" row of premises wafing its fragrance along it.

Once they stop the gridlock of traffic on both Beach Road and Second Road (and all junctions thereof)

Maybe, just maybe they will have a 10% chance of getting 20% of all they wish Pattaya to be.

But, until then he will just keep his mouth yapping and his pockets bulging through graft, and play to the crowd as it were.

Typical Thai. Say what you think people want to hear, even though what you say sounds utter crap to those people hearing it :llaugh

I have seen many movies that were made in Pattaya but they generally are not the type that Universal Studios makes. The "production facillities" are usually just a hotel room, so it should not take three years to set up.

Pattaya requires a better Infrastructure to be considered a world class destination.

New hotels and Condo complexes are being built at a rapid rate in recent years.

Yet the sewage systems essentially consists of dumping waste in the sea.

The tourism they are looking for is an economic death nail. Las Vegas learned this long ago. Encouraging family tourism nearly collapsed the Las Vegas economy is late 80's/early 90's. When they leveled the amusement parks for nightclubs, the economy skyrocketed again. Lesson to be learned for Pattaya tourism folks.

I agree with this 100%

Pattaya is a party town and should remain as such.

Thailand has many islands and locations that cater to family tourist tourism already.

Hi,

The only way Pattaya will change is if the Thai economy does so well that the girls give up P4P.

Very true.

Although with how much Thai bar-girls like to sleep, its unlikely to decline in the foreseeable future :llaugh

If the Thai economy continues to grow based on its growing exports, then the baht will continue strengthening.

This will force p4p to grow in neighbouring countries.

The guys who run Pattaya love to talk about what they are going to do and then they do nothing. They would have to spend a lot of money to bring Pattaya up to a western International standard and I doubt they are prepared to do that.As another poster has said, the economy of Thailand would have to improve significantly for the girls to stop working in the bars etc. I really do not know why any family would take their kids to Pattaya anyway,it is a huge brothel.
