Why are poles required to stay on the left side of the plane?

So you're an engineer. Whoopee.

As in north pole/south pole or as in flag pole?

??

Your geekiness is coming through loud and clear.

As to your silly question, apparently masquerading as some sort of Big Bang Theory Sheldon-like joke, one answer could be Poles in the right half plane correspond to growing amplitudes; for example, a sine wave that keeps getting louder and louder without bound. That's unstable. Poles in the left half plane correspond to exponentially decreasing amplitudes.

I thought this was a Polish joke.

Can't be, OP didn't capitalize pole.

Really, I have to wonder about short...

Here's something that might be relevant to his OP...

The idea of Kac was used in many other jokes. The following one requires some prerequisite in linear differential equations (MA 366 would be enough:-)

3. A Polish airplane crashed, because an engineer was taught that for stability, ``all Poles have to be in the left half plane''.

(They were talking about the poles of the ``transfer function'', that is the inverse matrix of (sI-A). Here is a recent paper about these "poles")

When I saw the OP yesterday, prior to any replies, I just felt, 'I can't be bothered even applying any thought or research to this;........

It developed more legs than I thought it would.

Pretty geeky, eh?

Well I've learned something I didn't know yesterday…trouble is I'll have forgotten what it was by tomorrow.

Did you? Have you? Will you....?

……………….Did I? Have I? will I? What?

I forget, did you, will you, have you?

Well yes and no!

I shall check again tomorrow.......

(That silly interchange made as much sense to me as the OP so I feel confident it isn't really a thread-fuck!)

And another thing...... I've learnt something I didn't know.........trouble is I'll have forgotten it by tomorrow.

I have unlearned something I did know, I think.

Actually I think everyone's been a bit harsh on ole Short. Loads of times I've passed on some fact or other I've just come across and that I've found interesting.

We all do it Short so don't let the scorn and contumely stop you posting anything you find interesting.

short seems to suffer from frequent alcohol-induced brain farts such as the OP.

He never did get back to this topic to explain "the joke".
