Titties ( ? ) On Jomtien... The Australian pie restaurant.

First of all I must to admit, I’m not a pie expert... not at all, I ate this kind of meal first time in my life. I never felt the need to try this food because of the appearance. However I decided to stop to experimenting with newly found meals ( an other report soon ) and listen the posters in this group.

The pies still looked somehow smallish for me, but let’s make the blind date... Chicken mornay pie ( 135 baht ) + salad to have something fresh on my plate ( 50 baht ) My friend ordered a chicken moshroom pie ( 135 baht ) + salad and french fries combo ( 70 baht ) ... as you see, the generous portion of the fries were only 20 baht extra on top of the salad, really reasonable price. I must to say, the pies may look small, but they aren’t with the filling. Following the meal I was full and I missed my usual dessert... ( I could’t eat it all with the french fries )

My Chicken mornay pie was simple delicious, the inside chicken in the sauce was perfect. However I don’t know one thing ( remember, my first encounter with an Australian pie ) the dough seemed me too dry, see the amount of the crumbs left on my plate ... Either my pie was dry, either I can’t eat properly a pie... on my friend’s plate wasn’t a simple crumb when he finished his meal. BTW he liked very much his Chicken, mushroom pie.

The salad was nicely created, on the bottom some tasty mayo type dressing and separately served a vinegar, oil based topping, which was also delicious and the combination of the tastes were perfect.

The french fries were freshly made and crispy, a fine item... but this fact resulted a major fault... When my plate was ready it was served to me, whilst my friend’s plate arrived with the freshly made french fries when I almost finished my meal.

Soda water: 30 baht

Verdict: Worth a try, I’m sure I will be back to try some other pies, I liked the place. My friend’s opinion: Good food and not expensive. ( IMO a bit pricey, but worth to try it )

I think it's called Tinnies. A tinny in Australian is a can of beer.How that relates to pies I don't know.

Gabor, thanks for the review. Maybe you haven't had Puff Pastry on a pie before, but that is quite normal in Australia. Short Crust pastry is usually used for the base and puff pastry for the top.

His pastries are very good...light, flaky, tasty...I've no problem with them at all.

Tinnies: Roasted lamb pie

Spoiled by the Fraser’s pies I have ambivalent thoughts... The pie was good. The pastry was good, but still not the same league with the Fraser’s. The filling was good, I felt the taste of the lamb, it was tasty. But still only 4 chunk of lamb, instead of the 15-20 chunks in the Fraser’s wagyu pie. The mint sauce was good... but not the same league I got in Fraser’s ( true with the roasted lamb ) The salad and the cole slaw was good, but extra charge. The Fraser’s pie was 2-3 times bigger, but a little bit thinner.

Fraser’s pie + french fries or salad + beer / soft drink 225 baht

 

Tinnies pie: 170 baht + salad 50 baht + salad and french fries 70 baht + soft drink 40 baht / water 20 baht ( 245 baht in my case )

Which is the better value ?

 

If the salad would added complimentary I would call it my second home...

My son boards at school in Australia......(Long Story involving his schoos l'st XI).......So he knows his pies.

I had been to Tinnies before and had not been impressed. Not certain what I had, but seem to remember it being dry and lacking taste.

 

Based on the spectrum of favorable reviews, I decided to give them another try and was glad I did. I had the beef, cheese and bacon pie. It was quite tasty and moist with a filling of finely ground beef along with the cheese and a bit of bacon. You could tell the cheese was there by taste rather than visual inspection.

 

I had mashed potatoes and peas along with the pie. I used the gravy provided on the potatoes rather than on the pie.

 

It wasn't a huge meal, but that's a plus for me.

A tinny in modern Aussie lexicon is also a small metal boat used to go fishing, the use of it to refer to beer cans went out with Barry McKenzie. Again hard to see the relationship with meat pies other than that they are often consumed on the travel to and from fishing trips occasionally with beer.
