Finally, direct flight from Los Angeles to Bangkok

Recommended Posts

United is starting direct service from Los Angeles to Bangkok on October 26,2025 on a 787-9. There is a 2 hour stop in HKG in both directions. The long segments are 16:05 westbound and 12:40 eastbound. Happy to miss the former TYO connection.

I’m booked for late February.

$4450 in Polaris. 1-2-1 seating, so you get and aisle and you get an aisle and you get an aisle......another plus about their lounges, they have a separate lounge in their hubs which is head and shoulders above their business lounges only for Polaris passengers. Their website has a description. And pajamas on flights over 14 hours. They are pretty decent. I actually saw a guy deplane in them once.

Do you get to exit the plane in that 2 hour layover?  A shower would be nice.

This was a real plus on the 24+ hour flight to BKK, shower in Narita and hit the ground running on Sukhumvit. Last trip I was scheduled on the A380 with a shower on board but they switched to the 777. No one wants to fly the 380 anymore but I have seen a few at the airport.

Bummer if you have to sit on the tarmac that two hours.  Heck even just a short walk around would be nice.  On the 380 Asiana announced they brought theirs out of mothballs and it flies LAX-ICN.

There is a non-stop (real) from YVR-BKK that is LONG operated by Air Canada.  But it is seasonal.  And maybe it isn't still running.  I flew that 3 years back.  Hey, long assed flight but one hop from America I like it.

I certainly would like to fly the A380, rather than the 777, more likely you mean the carriers don't want to fly them.

Yeah I thought he meant the carriers.  Everyone I know who has been on one likes them.

Yea the carriers found despite the increased loads the A380 is not cost effective. I missed the era of Nonstop Thai 17 hour JFK-Bkk. that would have been sweet.I don't fly anymore. My family can visit me here though I miss the freedom of Arizona and throwing dice in Vegas. I wish Thailand had a General Aviation sector, I'd buy a cheap plane and commute to Pattaya on my own. I thought about riding the CBR to Bangkok but had to face my 70 y/o body is quite different than my 30 y/o body.

I loved the A380.  Hawaiian to Hawaii and return.  A couple of trips to Bangkok and back with Emirates.

I don't normally look which plane is flying the route when booking,as they often change them.  But I was highly pissed when the A380 I was booked on was changed to a  737

I would not drive a motorcycle all the way from Pattaya to Bangkok.  I do not trust the other drivers enough to make that trek.  As a fellow Septuagenarian I like cars.  Full size cars.  LOL.  If I ever return to Thailand I will try to fly Asiana on a 380 if the price is similar.  Well I'll first try the non-stop from Vancouver.  But I think they have priced it over my pain threshhold.

Jeez from a 380 to a 737?  Like booking a limo and getting a Kia Soul.  🤣

That's wild.I would have to think about cancelling and booking another carrier. My current flight, and all I want to ever do, is my 45 minute to BKK. They installed Business class seating at the front. I was a pretty spoiled guy when I flew but I'm not seeing 5,500 baht when  economy is 2550 for 45 min.

I use to use the jfk to bkk flights back in the day.  Thai Airways said they were not cost effective and pulled out of the U.S. .  I understand they had a problem with their US security certifícate also. I understand they are now looking at restarting the route as the new aircraft are more fuel efficient and working at getting their security certifícate upgraded.  Cathy Pacific has had the US to HKG non-stop flights for years. 16 hours plus and on about another 3 to BKK.

The story I heard was that they ran it while a member of the rf attended university in the US, and stopped it after.  The security certificate angle is also plausible.

Those flights were interesting in that no matter which of the three possible routes they took (west, east, or due north/south) the flight duration was nearly the same.

I'm pretty sure you do but leaving the immediate gate area may be prohibited.  You're right,it would be nice.
