There are good Swiss/German restaurants down soi Diamond past the GO-Gos, and most all the overpriced, over the beach seafood places have farang items on the menu. If that doesn't appeal, take a baht bus and go to Shenanigans on the Avenue.

Go with the cheapest between Emirates, Ethiad and Qatar. They are all good airlines. The alternatives (BA yeauch, Heathrow, KLM, AF, China Airlines, Scandanavian, Lufthansa etc aren't as good and to be honest I like the break about halfway). Beware of poor connections where you get stuck in Dubai/Abu Dhabi or Doha for over 3 hours as in economy it is a bit of a drag. Be aware that Ramadan ends (Eid al Fitr starts) August 30th, and Eid al Adhr starts Nov 6th. These Islamic holidays will affect availability and price about then. I did a quick search and if price is your most important consideration AF showed £478 with a nasty layover in Paris outward of over 10hours. (Opodo)

I wouldn't lose sleep over being controlling where these girls are concerned. EG EVA LHR rtn 24,000+ I just did a quick search on Qatar for a 10/24 August trip to Manchester and it was 41,000 Baht and available. £845, not £1000.

Where you ultimately end up living may impact on that decision. Getting the kid to and from a distant school 2xdaily may not be a chore you wish to undertake. Many schools will provide a mini-bus pick up service but the cost seems to vary a lot. Although the kid is probably old enough to drive himself now.

If I spend a night in town, which is rare, I don't think I do any better than Joe tourist. Likely it is a peak season time (like New Years Eve), or it is a walk-in with bag over shoulder. When I just fancy a good night out, and the ability to drive in and home in the AM after a fry-up breakfast, I don't feel a need to search out a bargain either.
