Nation journalist held up at gunpoint by 'police' Published on January 13, 2011 Walking along Sanphawut Road at around 4.30pm on Thursday, my son and I were stopped by a group of three men, one in uniform, standing opposite the Chinese temple. They nodded at each other then stopped us and asked whether we were Indians. Assuming they were policemen, I answered yes and showed them my driving licence and ID card for The Nation, where I work. One of the group then snapped: "You don't talk anymore. We are from Immigration. We want your passport." Another man emerged from the rear seat of a Toyota Vigo pickup and pushed us into it, taking away my wallet with ID card, driving licence, credit card, debit card and money, while two of the original group got in the front. We told them our passports were at home, and they said they'd take us there. Instead, they sped past our building, telling us to "shut up" and that they were taking us to Immigration. After demanding my wallet, I succeeded in snatching it back. Instead of taking a right-turn for Suan Plu and the Immigration Department, the pickup went left to Thanon Thangrot Fai Sai Kao and towards Samrong. I said I needed to call my office and inform them I was being taken to Immigration, but they would have none of it. In the commotion I realised that the man next to me was trying to prise the wedding ring off my finger. It was obvious that all of them were drunk and looking to make a quick buck from innocent foreigners. I managed to get the ring back, then, as I tried to call my office, the man in the back grabbed at my cellphone. My son protested, and was told that he was "talking to much" by the driver, who threatened he would be shot. His partner in front then produced a gun, cocked it and pointed it at my son. I told them they didn't look like real policemen (two were in plain clothes), and asked to see some ID. Simultaneously they produced their cards, saying: "How dare you ask such questions. We don't like The Nation. You are against the police. You'll be taken to Pattaya and shot." We asked what they wanted. The "policeman" beside us produced a cellophane bag and ordered us to put our belongings in it, then grabbed at the wallet belonging to my son, who resisted. The man responded by trying to put handcuffs on my son. The front-seat passenger again pointed his gun at my son, barking that he "deserved to die". Looking for an exit, we wound down the windows. The pickup then slowed as we reached an intersection, and we took our chance, struggling desperately with the "policemen" in an effort to open the doors. I cranked open my door, which was immediately nicked by another car, causing the driver of our vehicle to scream at his colleagues to stop us. At this point we began yelling for help to attract attention. The spooked driver swerved towards the right kerb, and we managed to jump out. The pickup, with number plate Cho kacher O ang 5342, then sped away against the traffic in the wrong lane. We were shaken up, but knew we could have suffered much worse at the hands of three out-of-control, drunk, gun-wielding thugs calling themselves policemen. It was a hair-raising ordeal and my 17-year-old son is already having nightmares. This is Bangkok, not the badlands of Pakistan or Iraq, and yet men in uniform are able to roam the streets preying on foreigners. I dread to think what the outcome would have been had something similar happened to my wife or any woman less able to defend herself. George Cherian Sports editor (The Nation)

Well, you are right about that. I do have some stories about mis-communications with Thai's. I'm not sure that being able to speak as well as a 4 year old Thai child would help me much though. Bobby told her Nit Noy, a Thai word, but it was taken to mean the opposite of what he was thinking. A further explanation was needed. I can see myself in that same situation, even if I knew Thai, and thinking I had given enough instruction as to what I wanted, then getting something different. Maybe not in a hair cut situation, but something similar.

Okay, this has to be asked. If you saw that many people gave bad reviews,,,, Why would you book a room there? Did you think that the people that didn't like the place, were not truthful in their assessment? This posts begs for a smart assed statement. While your post is to warn others like you, not to book a room there. If they are like you, they will anyway.

Hotel in South Pattaya with parking
lovedog100 replied to jte's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
Dream Hotel 2nd road about 100 M south of Pattaya Thai Phone number 038-420771,3 I'm not sure if the last number is an extension or not. That's the way they gave me their number. 700-1100 baht Not as nice, but has a pool, and secure parking in The Honey lodge on Pattaya Thai, just a couple of shops up from walking street. Sorry, lost their number. 700 baht Residence Garden has good parking, pool, don't quote me on high season price, but I think it 1,400 baht easily found online -
I had to laugh. Not at you, but at the way Thai's make mistakes, because of the language barrier. While you and I know what you were asking for, she heard the opposite. At least it will grow back. The wonders of living in Thailand never stop.

The best way is to go to a pharmacy, and buy the testosterone vials. You will have to look for it. Usually those closest to a Gym have it. Then take your vile to a clinic and tell them that you need an injection. Most will do it for 100 baht. There is a place on second road, by soi 16 that has it. I think they are still there. They were planning on moving up the soi that goes up to the Arab, gay area, you can see it from there. They also know of a clinic that will do the injection for 50 baht. Easier to find are Testosterone jell caps. They can be found in almost any pharmacy. Those on Central road give the best deal. One good thing about the caps is, you can bring a 30 day supply home with you. An Injectable will get you a lot of grief with customs.

Death of a Shopping Mall: A Rant
lovedog100 replied to MeGoDanceNow's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
The real problem with the Avenue is the owners. The movie theater, California wow, and the mall are all owned by the same company. They really don't care about other business. The night market brings in foot traffic for the California wow people to run their sales pitch on. Anyone going to a movie, will just walk threw the market to the theater. -
You didn't say how long that you are staying. Personally, I like to book a room for a couple of days, and then look around for a place I like better. The down side to that is, looking for another place is a lot like work. The up side, it gives you something to do during the day.

I'll agree, and disagree with frosty. We went on a bar crawl, and together frosty and myself set off to find a bar with some ladies. There are a lot of bars, and a lot of ladies. I would guess most to be mid 20's to mid 30's with some younger, and older mixed in. Most bars had a lady we were interested in. The problem was, it was one lady, and we both thought the same one looked good. We did find a place where there were more than two that looked good. We sat had drank and flirted with the girls. We left with the bar crawl. Later that night, we decided to go back for the girls. When we got there, they were already taken. As was our second choices. There really wasn't much there for us after that. Had either of us been alone, we probably would have found company for the night. If you are not as picky as us, or go with a friend with different taste in women as you, then you may enjoy it. Another downside for me is no air-con in any of the bars. There are men I could go with and have a good time though. Although, with frosty, or MM, our taste are to similar, and it just doesn't work. Especially with MM, we not only both like the young, stunner, spinner, but we also like attention from more than one lady at a time. There isn't a bar in the whole plaza that MM and I could sit in together, and not be bored to tears. I've been there several times. I would say that I like it better than Soi 7. They don't play the bait and switch with the hello girls. Other wise, it's a lot like Soi 7 though better set up to walk with out dodging motorbikes and cars. If Soi 7 is your thing, it might be an up grade for you. If you are looking for the better looking ladies, there are better options.

calumny, I think I have been rather nice. Yes, I had a bit of fun at your expense, but only in an attempt to get you to give more info. Several others have also told you, that you need to give more info. No one is going to PM you for "contact details" for a bike we know nothing about. No one wants to take a test drive on a bike that doesn't fit our needs, or price range. Most of us will not drive to Chang Mai, to see the bike, if that's where you are. Again, you haven't said. At this point, I think that you will have a hard time selling it here even if you give information now. I think anyone would be reluctant to negotiate price with you, if just asking the year of the bike, and number of kilometers on it makes you want to fight. You don't seem to play well with others. Are you perhaps a banned member? Frosty and I have gone to great lengths to try an explain what you need to make "value of the site." You can call me a disruptor if you like, but as Frosty tried to explain to you. He and I are looking for a CBR150, we live here, and we both have money. Obviously I'm not someone "who have no interest in the item but only want to disrupt the process." Neither he, nor I are on Baht buses, he has already told you that we both already own two motorcycles each. Maybe you should go back and look at the posts, all 37 of them. Try and comprehend what was said. Try not to take it so personal. Look while you are not drinking, and skip your steroids for the day. Read twice if you have to. In 37 posts, you still haven't given any information asked for. If you seriously want to sell your motorbike, don't alienate potential buyers, or those that are asking because they have friends looking for a bike. Here is the information that anyone would like to have, before they call or PM to come and take a look. 1. Price 2. Year of motorbike. 3. # of kilometers it has on it 4. color 5. Where it's located. (you don't have to give your address, but we want to know if you're in Pattaya, Rayone, BKK, or Chang Mai) 6. what Provence it's registered in. 7. A picture would do wonders for your effort. While you may think that what Provence it's registered in, isn't important. I just spent six full days and thousands of baht, trying to get my motorcycle that was registered in Rayong, changed to Chonburi. I have no interest in going threw that again.

Any time you want ass hole. Funny that you should call me the idiot, when you can't figure out, that to sell your motorbike, you have to give information. You want to sell, it's up to you to make me, or someone else want to PM. You need to sell, more than I need another motorcycle. Why should I or anyone else have to go threw the effort to PM, and then wait for an answer, for what should have been in the original post in the first place. Maybe I'll consider it, if you lower the price 5,000 baht. But you will have to change those crappy tires.
-
Actually, it has nothing to do with your user name. You did not include a pic. Didn't say what age it is, didn't tell us how many kilometers are on it, You didn't tell us the price, or even tell us the color. Yes, we were joking with you, while telling you to give more information. Not sure why you didn't catch on. I can tell you right now, I'm not interested in a 10 year old bike that is green with high mileage, and that is over priced. For all I know, that's what you have. You are the seller, it's up to you to market your motorbike. By the way, I have a cell phone for sale. Contact me if you want it.

Damn, some of that was funny, but Half the time I was cringing, it looked like it really hurt.
-
It's not the look that is unattractive, but the color. I could never be seen on a bike that color.
-
It sounds like way to much money for such an old bike. Especially with that many kilometers on it.

Looking for long-term housing on Dark side
lovedog100 replied to up to me's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
Here is a place, not on the dark side. It is in a quiet area, non touristy, that is more like what you want. It has two big bedrooms, two bath, partial furnished, village pool. I believe that they want 15,000 a month. There is usually other places in the same village that come up for rent. -
Your link is for a place in Chang Mai. That's a bit far to go for a dog.

Frosty, if you see a German Shepard while looking, let me know.

Pathetic to want food from home? Are you serious? I call it comfort food. I often have breakfast at Tigglebitties, it being the only place in Pattaya to have a real American breakfast. Mikes is good also, I'd eat there more often if they had some Thai food on the menu for the girlfriend. The Saturday BBQ at Kinnaree is good as well. Americans have little offered to them in Pattaya, in the way of food. You Brits can find food all over Pattaya. By your way of thinking, there must be a whole lot of pathetic Brits in town eating all that food.

BEWARE....The Cottage Hotel...2nd Road.
lovedog100 replied to Mirkwood's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
The problem with naming and shaming on this board is. Several people will say that they stayed there and didn't have a problem. As if that means the OP is some how responsible for what happened. Others will consider it a recommendation, (or maybe a challenge) and book a room tomorrow. You can look at the Jetski scam thread, and the Walking street bar thread for conformation of that statement. Personally, when I read about someone being cheated, scammed, or robbed, I consider that place not worth giving my hard earned Baht. Common sense tells me that 100% of the customers will not be cheated, scammed, or robbed, or they couldn't stay in business. It's usually a small percentage of customers that have problems. I just don't want to be in that percentile. Why would I want to, if there are honest run business's all over town? -
The music is way to loud. It's not good either. The 20 somethings that like gangster rap and hip hop would feel at home. The drinks are outrageous priced. I have yet to find a place charging as much for drinks. It makes Lucifer and Goodfella's seem cheap. The freelancers go in for the young, two week millionaires. More than half of us on this board are between 40-60 years of age, and wouldn't get a second look from the freelancers in there, if you started yourself on fire.

Looking for long-term housing on Dark side
lovedog100 replied to up to me's topic in Hotel and Accommodation Questions
If you can go up to 30K, why go to the dark side? Most go there to ave money. It sounds like you don't have that issue. It's safer to live in Pattaya than on the dark side. Realtor's will mark up the rent, or they get the first months rent as a charge to the owner. I have found a house listed at three different realtor's for three different prices. Then found the house on my own, only to find that the realtor's marked up the price from 5000 baht per month, to double the owners asking price. Unless you are just lazy, the best way to find a house in Pattaya is to get on a motorbike and look. Ask around, in restaurants, bars, Starbucks or where ever you find an ex-pat, about villages that have rentals. You should have no problem finding a nice house for even less than 30K. When you get here, give me a PM, and I'll give you some ideas where to look.
