  1. Well, I suppose they could have let them out and then refused reentry.
  2. Overhead from an F-16 pilot, "Many a sad story begins with 'Hey, watch this.'"
  3. I'm living in View Talay 2A for the 6th consecutive trip and I wouldn't recommend it to the OP as providing what his friends are looking for.
  4. Won't say it's logical, but it appears some Turks consider Uighurs to be family. http://blogs.wsj.com/briefly/2015/01/30/5-things-to-know-about-turkey-and-the-chinese-uighurs/. Still, the current theory being offered by the authorities may just be well imagined. Who knows.
  5. We are a little over a month before the equinox and the sun is close to directly overhead. We should be back to "sun in the north" in late April.
  6. Got into the exit row on China Airlines this week by being at the check-in counter almost as soon as it opened and asking. I did appreciate the leg room but you give up a couple inches of male spread because the tray tables are in the arm rests. Also you video screen is on a fold away arm. Overall, still probably worth it, but things to consider.
  7. A couple of years ago, my bill for 2 crowns and a root canal came to about $1,600 at Bangkok Hospital-Pattaya. That's certainly not the cheapest place to get dental work in town but the need arose without warning and I wasn't inclined to do a lot of research. I was very impressed with the root canal, no pain other than the sedation shot--it was in the upper jaw, OUCH! Nothing wrong with the crowns either. No experience with implants. There are an awful lot of storefront clinics claiming to do them. Take a close look at your dental coverage to see if they pay on overseas claims. It wouldn't be unheard of.
  8. Just in case your retirement benefits include health insurance, peruse the plan carefully to see if it provides coverage outside the U.S.
  9. Things can change a lot in 9 years but you know that. As to the immigration requirements, a common option and the one I chose was to enter on a tourist visa. I converted it to a NON-IMMIGRANT VISA with an "O" category. A stamp on the facing page said it was "NON-O-RETIREMENT" and that I was admitted for 90 days. Before the 90 days expired, I went to Jomtien immigration and got a one year extension on my period of stay. At different times and places, people have gotten the conversion and the extension at the same time. Or you can apply for a non-immigrant O-A visa for the purpose of retirement while in the U.S. That can be done through the Los Angeles consulate.
  10. Cathay Pacific flight makes emergency landing at Shemya air station By Matthew Smith, KNOM - Nome | July 29, 2015 Eareckson Air Station, on Shemya Island. (Photo: US Air Force) Updated 7/29/15 at 11:55 a.m. A Cathay Pacific flight en route from Hong Kong to Los Angeles made an emergency landing at an Aleutian Islands military airport early Wednesday morning due to smoke inside the plane. Ian Gregor, a spokesperson with the Pacific Division of the Federal Aviation Administration, says Flight 884 “declared an emergency and diverted to Eareckson Air Station in Shemya,” at the far western edge of the Aleutian chain. Airlines officials described the emergency as “smoke detected in the aircraft.” The Boeing 777 landed without incident around 3:30 Wednesday morning. Cathay Pacific spokesperson Jennifer Pearson says all 276 passengers and 18 crew aboard landed safely. Air Force Colonel Frank Flores — the regional commander for Eareckson and 20 other installations in the Pacific and Alaska — says the air station has a single 10,000-foot long asphalt runway with a modern instrument landing system. “And it can handle a Triple 7, it can handle our larger aircraft,” Flores said. “It was built up in the 40s to handle bomber and reconnaissance aircraft, and we’ve maintained it primarily as a divert runaway.” Old aircraft revetments, buildings, and two other runways on the island date back to World War II and are mostly abandoned. But an operational crew of about 120 people — contracted through the Air Force — were on the ground to handle the emergency landing. “We get airplanes out there probably once a day, once every other day,” Flores said. “So we have a contingent of people who will respond to any aircraft arrival. Any aircraft arrival requires us to mobilize firefighters, airfield mangers, and airfield personnel. People to receive passengers and cargo. So when this airplane came in, an announcement was put over the net and all those people assembled in the airfield just like they would for any other arrival.” Though it’s still unclear what grounded the flight beyond the smoke in the aircraft, Colonel Flores says the plane appears to have been “fixed” and could be in the air by noon Wednesday. When it does leave Shemya, the airline says the plane will fly to Anchorage, where another Cathay Pacific plane will bring passengers the final leg to Los Angeles. The Cathay Pacific flight is operated jointly with American Airlines and South America’s LAN Airlines.
  11. Try 12.906416N 100.873972E. 12.906416S 100.873972W, for example, puts you in open water southwest of the Galapagos.
  12. Here's a couple of agents. http://www.philcristy.com http://dancewatchers.com My experience is with Dancewatchers and I have been quite happy.
  13. Way too much information. But if it works for you.
  14. Aka Namsan Tower. It was quite visible from the Yongsan Army Garrison which I often visited 1981-83. Yongsan is a bit to the southwest. Missed a turn once on the way to Yongsan and found myself gloriously lost in downtown Seoul. I found my way back by spotting the tower and steering for it until I saw something I recognized at ground level.
  15. I'm sure there is conventional wisdom on the relationship between interest rates and a currency's value, but is that it? Usually, a central bank raises interest rates to restrain inflation. An anti inflation measure might be taken as a sign the currency will remain strong. On the other hand, the threat of inflation may push the value of a currency down.
  16. Senior cop pulls rank to avoid getting jammed up. Not good but I know it happens. Intentionally publicizing it in this light is worrisome.
  17. The initial Air Asia service will be to Kuala Lumpur.
  18. For a very good read on UK ground forces in the Korean War--To the Last Round by Andrew Salmon. The focus is on the battle at Gloster Hill northwest of Seoul in 1951.
  19. I don't know about you, but, to echo George Carlin, I want to get out of the plane. Anyway, one gets on de baht bus.
  20. 5.8 earthquake this afternoon in south central Alaska. It was centered well outside town and rather deep so no damage, but we definitely felt it.
  21. After eating lunch at a local Carl's Jr., I go out to get in my truck. A woman comes out and clicks her key fob at the next car over, but there is no chirp. She then walks on past and says "I was trying to get into the wrong car." Okay, I can understand that. Only thing is, her car was a Toyota Corolla. The first car she tried was an Audi.
  22. You've been hanging around the guys from the UK too much. Are you saying that the online reporting is not available if you are within the last 7 days?
  23. I use Levitra. Last time I bought it in Pattaya, it was at a place on 2nd Road which is commonly mentioned. The guy at the counter, possibly the owner, asked if I wanted the real thing or imitation. He pointed out that the real thing was more expensive, approximately twice as much. He showed me the imitation pointed out that the packaging was quite close. He said some would sell you the imitation and charge the original's price. I hope he wasn't one of them.
  24. In the last couple of years, I have made four trips to Thailand where the return reservation was more than 30 days out. For one, the boarding agent (at check in) verbally expressed concern until I pointed out my visa. On another trip, I saw the agent entering information in the computer with my passport open to the visa page. I don't remember anything specific about the other two trips. August will be the first time with a one way ticket and a reentry permit.
  25. A couple of thoughts: CTers seem to be totally unacquainted with the notion of context. This clip appears to be from JFK's speech to the American Newspaper Publishers Association on April 27, 1961. The You Tube clip is deceptive as it was not a speech to a joint session of Congress. If you look at the transcript there is absolutely nothing about the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve http://www.jfklibrary.org/Research/Research-Aids/JFK-Speeches/American-Newspaper-Publishers-Association_19610427.aspx. Listening to it, I am inclined to think JFK would have been greatly concerned about Putin's aggression.
