Recommended Posts

After taking my Thai lession today in UK ,my Thai teacher telling me strange things

About new goverment now ,but think not for discussion on board ,

but may be some issues ahead of the country we love :ang2

Also about what may happend when the loved king is here no more ,but will not discuss this on the board

as per rules :clap2

But she also tell me BBK in the future will not be the capital of Thailand ,due to this being on low

land and possible flooding in the future :hijack

SHe even tell me Capital could be in the North East ,

Has anybody else hear this about the capital

Also she tell me if I live in Thailand North East would be a safer place in the future .

God knows where she gets all this information ,but she does have a lot of very educated friends

in Thailand.

Ummm . . . no. The capital has been Bangkok for about 300 years. Seems like this teacher is too caught up with global warming, or that the PPP's power base is in the north. Over 30% of the population lives in Bangkok. There would be tremendous upheaval from relocating the capital, and probable strong opposition led by the crown.

Congratulations on the Thai lessons, you are halfway to becoming Thai, enjoying idle gossip and speaking pidgin English! :banghead

There is indeed an active project to move the capital from Bangkok. Scheduled completion is the week after the opening of one of those legal casinos, and the year before the first ship through the Kra Canal.

When I first came to LOS over 20 years ago there was talk of the capital sinking and eventually having to be abandoned but they just dug more canals and drained it. Last year The King allowed flood water to be sent East and North to alieviate flooding in Bangkok and that is not the first time.

Engineers will solve the problems unless global warming causes bigger tidal seas rises and then who knows but for sure IMHO the teacher is pretty wrapped up in gossip and listening to her friends who must be doing the same.

Well perhaps when Thaksin gets back into power, he will move it to Chiangmai.....or Manchester.

I do get the sense the next decade is going to be one of profound change for Thailand. For reasons such as those mentioned in the OP.

As the Buddha said, ginseng, the only thing constant is change. You can definitely count on change -- except from a baht bus driver of course.

Si keeps mentioning the large area of land that is now under sea water near BKK. I suppose Koh Lahn was joined to the mainland once. I hope they move the capital to the Pitchet area, that bit of land we bought will be worth a few bob then.

Just monitor where Mr T starts to buy up rice fields.

I started coming to Thailand in the early 80's. In those days BKK would flood every single year to the point that vehicle travel became impossible, the water would reach just under the car windows and engines die. That's why the high steps on older buildings to get up to the ground floor are there.

They've sorted that out long ago. BKK has very little flooding now, even during the worst monsoons. When was the last time your teacher was in BKK?

Holy shit... If he were to move the capital there with all the bars, girls, fun etc i would be in total heaven. A mere hour on the Motorway.

If only.
