I'm looking for a very easy place to find for an ear cleaning. I also need a haircut.

If you're coming down beach road to where it ends at Walking Street, take a left. There is a real good barber shop that will give you the works. Its on the right side of the street before you get to 2nd Road. Top notch service. I go eveytime when Im in Pattaya.

A BIG caution. I can't remember ever having an ear infection in my life. That is until a Thai barber cleaned my ears. I went to the eye, ear and nose specialist and the first thing he asked me is if a barber cleaned my ears. He told me in no uncertain terms to NEVER do that again. Since that I have had ear infections on a fairly regular basis.

Never had an issue yet, but thanks for the info.

That place is always my first stop after I get in, have a rest, shower, etc. Great haircut and service for cheap. The only thing I don't like is the old man giving me a shoulder massage. :D

I'm not sure how the barbers approach real ear cleaning, but I had mine done properly at the hospital on Soi 4, I believe - can't remember the name of it - and it was great, much more fun than the same procedure at home thanks to the cute, cheerful nurses.....I have always had heavy wax buildup and need to get it irrigated and syringed out with the proper gear every year or two. I get this done free of charge at home with our health plan, but then I have to make an appointment, take time off work, etc....in Pattaya you just drop in and they take care of you. Can't remember the price, unfortunately, but it was reasonable.

Best cure I have found for ear infections is Ciproflaxcin. Buy the Thai version for 100 baht for 10 tablets from most pharmacies. It is a general purpose anti-biotic, also good for colds and congestion if your phlegm is yellow.

I'd bet more than a few baht it's an absence of chlorine in the pool to kill all the nasty shit that thrives there.

There's an ear de-waxing clinic just off Walking Street. It's free of charge and is run by the local taxi-drivers.

No appointment needed.......Just walked in off the street and laid my 'todger' out on the table. He hits it with a hammer and the wax shot out of my ears.!!

Since extended ear cleaning is normally done with a syringe filled with fluid, I assume the person doing it, must have some knowledge of it.

Why risk ear damage, while you can have it done by a qualified professional for almost next to fuck all. :D

  • 3 weeks later...

There are 2 types of earwax. If you're a Farang, your probably have the wet type, while Asians have the dry type. Note the risks, but even if all goes well you may not benefit from it as much as a Thai would.

I did ear cleaning with an barber in SE Asia once, and while there were no bad effects, nothing positive came out of it either. Just the same stuffy feeling as before. Surely not worth the risk. Go to a proper ENT clinic.

I just use a Q-tip every so often and all's well.

I'm sure not going to have someone I don't know poking around in my ears.

Look at your little finger. Don't put anything smaller than that in your ear or you risk damaging your hearing. I speak from experience, fortunately I had only damaged the ear canal, not the hearing bits, so it healed OK.

IMHO, if your little finger won't do it, have a doctor do it. Your hearing is too easily ruined to involve an amateur.

Sea water does a fair job though, so finding a clean beach and going for a swim will shift most wax. Scuba is even better.

So should I wear something if I go for a swim in a hotel pool? Are there earplugs for swimming?

Yes of course you can. Sports shops and Dive shops have them. I swim a Km every morning, had 8 ear infections before wearing plugs (slow learner)..........I also spray the plugs with an anti-septic as I leave them in my car and the heat multiplies whatever's on them. Not a problem now.
