second hand book shops in pattaya

Recommended Posts

Yes I guess it can be done on the cheap but many people use the exchange system and it works well, I can buy a book in Canterbury Tales Bookshop that was 350 baht in Asia books a few days before for 160 baht and then get 50% of that back in credit when I have read it thus reading a very recently published book for about 1 pound 50 gbp where it was 7 quid from Asia books.

Also when I buy new books maybe at the airport at least I can trade it in at the Canterbury and very rare that I go in there and they dont have any books I have not read, they have just about all books by all the main Authors as well as a great selection of Bio's, true crime, war which are also my favourites.

All about choices I guess.

You need to consider the time you are taking a shit.   For me, that's a book a week.

I've just tried downloading a book from the Kindle store on Amazon. OK you pay nearly full price but the selection is massive and the book arrives in about 3 seconds. You need a Kindle or a Netbook with a good battery but it provides much more choice.

Hi Logan,I have no doubt that you can find what you wanted in Canterbury tales ,and I am glad you think the prices are good,I don,t think the prices you quoted for second hand books are good as I almost never buy books (even second hand) but get them from my local library , so any price that is put on them is in my opinion generaly too high. When in Pattaya I generally swap a few boks in the various bars that offer a free swap service and as I read quite a lot I save myself some baht in the process.

i just got back from Pattaya and found Canterbury tails invaluable. I need very little sleep and am not one for spending all day with last nights barfine so come hungry time I wake her up and give her the option of breakfast or offski. Well, I have a bot of a disability so I cant do much in Pattaya and I hate sitting on one of those deckchairs getting bored and hot or reading a book getting hot so when i discovered Canterbury Tails it was like a Buddahsend. Lifes far to short to spend in bed with a hangover, get down to this place and learn something by reading, have a relaxing drink and a bite to eat.

I only use the two places in Patts--its all I am aware of and that is the second floor at Tops and Canterbury Tales. It all depends where I am staying but in general I am prepared to travel the extra distance to get to Cantebury Tales.

The only problem with the Kindle is that the most popular ebook file type - epub - which is the mp3 for ebooks are not compatable with the Kindle. They sell their own proprietary DRM'd file type that doesn't work on any other ebook readers. I wouldn't want to pay for an ebook what Amazon charges, I would rather buy a physical book from them.

I have however bought one of the latest Sony ereaders Sony ebook which play epub files and has a touch screen unlike Kindle. The e-ink screen is easy on the eye and the font size adjustable. I download my ebooks from Demonoid for free and I have already downloaded more ebooks than I will ever read. You want the complete works of Bernard Cornwell, takes a few minutes to download and so on and on. Bestsellers or classics - all are easily available for free. Fortunately epub files are very small so they download rapidly as well.

Somewhat off topic post but anyone who likes reading a lot and lives somewhere like Thailand where the book selection might be limited really needs to get an ebook reader. Really you do, trust me.

Canterbury Tales Bookshop has a good selection, they have an offer on now, Private Dancer, (395) money number one (450) & Damage done,(450) all new books apparently 300 baht each, in bracket prices are Asia books prices its on their website.

The thing I like about Canterbury Books is when you have read it you can get 50% credit refund which Asia books etc do not offer which is great especially when you buy a book that is crap.

We are in constant need of more books so if you have any cluttering up your shelves that you have finished with, trade them in at Canterbury Tales Cafe, we offer the best trade in value in Pattaya depending on the Author, condition, age etc, not really in need of Love stories for example.

We have many Thai related books, lots of sections on Non fiction such as War, True Crime, History, Classics, Footy Biographies and many more Bio's, as well as 1000's of books in English many in German, Dutch, French, Scandinavian, a few various.

So pop in & browse and see what you think.

Cheers Dave

Regarding the Kindle: Don't you have to worry about theft? What would you do with the kindle at the beach? Nobody is going to steal a used book from a beach chair...

Even at my peak..........ie before I lived here and with a holiday budget of 12 to 14000 a day spent directly on shags and not booze......sexually driven.................I still had time for a book and nam tdok moo on the beach at lunchtime.

Not much beats a good read.

No one's mentioned the book-shop upstairs at TOPS. I found 2 books in there that I've been looking for every trip back to the UK for 2 years and had on order with WH Smiths for 3 months.

I know of two in Jomtien, 1 is on Beach road Soi 2 (It used to be on Soi 3 but moved to a similar position on Soi 2) and the other on Soi Chaiyapruek.

I use this one on Soi Chaiypruek a lot,not the biggest shop but all books are 100 bt and 50 bt refund when you take them back.

Nice place and all the books are clearly set out in alphabetical order so you can see who's who.

Hi Dave

There is no contest about the value & quality of your breakfast but can you please send the resident Arsehole aka Del boy on a message away

from your place so that other people can enjoy a nice meal without his questionable humour & repartee.

He really doesn't do your business any good.

Only my opinion !

Cheers rogero :thumbup :chogdee :chogdee

I agree to a curtain extent Rogero but also many come in because of Del and a few others, he can be a little boystrous at times as can others but I guess its what makes it what it is, sorry he annoys you mate.

"Dave will also trade books in from anywhere,"

Is this right Dave? I have quite a collection, built up from from trips to RP. I will call in if its correct as I only have a couple of unread ones left.

Since I have discovered the Kindle, there have been no more paper books for me. A friend of mine bought one in the US and carried it here for me. ($139) Adjustable text size for my old eyes is better for me than reading glasses. I use a free program called Calibre to put books on my kindle. Calibre, so far, has converted every format (to mobi) I have put into it. I have not bought a single book. I now have nearly 7,000 books in Calibre. That's a lifetime of reading for me. I have about 1,000 books in the Kindle and delete then as I read them.

Amazon is working on a WiFi browser for the Kindle. It already works but not too well. I was able to check my email with it. It is certainly much better than a tiny smart phone screen.

Yes we will trade or buy books from absolutely anywhere depending on age, Author, condition etc.
