New pedestrian crossings

My friends and i tried to use one on Second road the other day and it was not working.

Last night i was on a Baht bus on Pattaya Tai and the driver went straight through one even though it was showing red to the traffic.

How long before the first fatality ?

Or maybe to the Thais, they mean something other than what some farangs think they should mean. There are several in BKK on Asoke between Petchaburi and Sukhumvit (one outside the eye hospital) that work pretty well - i.e. traffic gives way to pedestrians. If there aren't any pedestrians on the crossing, there's not really anything to give way to, so why hang around for no reason at all? There's actually a crossing (with no lights at all) on Sukhumvit, between Soi 33 and Emporium on the opposite side, that drivers seem to observe for some reason. The only downside is that the initial act of stepping out onto the crossing is like the Thai equivalent of bungee jumping.

The only vehicles that I've seen stop at the pedestrian crossing near Kiss restaurant across from Mike shopping mall were taxis when they stopped to pick up cutomers.

How do less mobile people manage to cross 2nd road?

Stepping in front of a baht bus is generally safe. They look for excuses to slow down so they can troll for passengers.

2 weeks ago when the 1st one was operational on Jomtien Beach Rd,a BB I was in actually stopped,probably because he was confused by the fact he'd never seen one.

Not a single one has stopped since when I have passed through.But they sure are pretty.

"Pedestrian crossings signals go live"

 

As of 1 Novemebe there are 42 lights installed at pedestrian crossings. There are now buttons to push that will change the traffic light from green to yellow to red. However, the major did state that "there will still be problems with drivers continuing to ignore the pedestrian crossing and with pedestrians realizing they need to push a button to cross."

 

Theye are actual lights not just "lines on the street". You should come to Pattaya one day and see for yourself that this is not a media myth.

Oh for heaven's sake, is THAT was that was? I couldn't figure out why the white guy was screaming and ranting and giving me the finger - in my rear-view mirror. I thought that light was an advertising come-on for a restaurant.

Just for fun i hit one of the buttons on second road near the entrance to the Hard Rock I think it was. I had no intention of crossing but the light changed and traffic stopped. I think its 20 second or so. I then saw another time that the baht bus blew right thru. Should be interesting when all of them are working.

Rode down Pattaya Tai yesterday and there was quite a tailback caused by the usual baht busses parked narrowing the road to one lane and one of those crossings... and traffic was stopping at the red light....

A little further down, another one was being completely ignored....they do seem to have put a lot of these things in... there must have been a great kickback into someone's pocket!

Anyone else remember the traffic light at the end of Thappraya Road that was installed a few years ago? Traffic was backed up halfway to Jomtien . The light couldn't have been in use more then a few months before it was changed to a blinking yellow.

The same will happen with the pedestrian crossing llights. Just imagine driving down Beach or 2nd road and having to stop every time someone wants to cross and pushes the button. I havn't counted the lights from North Pattaya road to South Pattaye road but I would guess 10 maybe. It will turn in Songkran traffic jams all year round.

Why not put in the same overhead crossings they have in other Thai cities?

 

If they did this it wouldn't even affect the traffic.

 

Any of the big shopping malls with half a brain would erect one that leads directly into their building like, say, Robinson's on Suk Rd Bkk.

The Thais have been living forever without these expensive crosswalks, it seems it was farangs who complained about the safety hazzards. I got a 500 baht fine last week for missing one accidentally in Jomtien. Now I stop as the Thai drivers, large buses and baht busses drive around me and thru the red light. The police seem to only target the farangs who apparently created the problem and expense.

Saw this happen on beach road the other day. Falang motorbike rider stopped and there was chaos behind him as all the speeding thai riders and drivers jammed on the brakes. He was lucky not to get killed !!

Havn't you heard, Pattaya is planning a skytrain.

First one wtih 5 stations from city hall on North Road, left at the Dolphin Roundabout onto 2nd and all the way to the 3rd road overpass and onto Bali Hai pier.

Second one with 4 stations also from city hall up North Pattaya to Suhkumvit and end at Soi Nongprue.

 

Plenty of chances for the big malls to add links like Bangkok.

Jakarta has walking bridges over worse traffic than Pattaya but you have to be a fucking mountain climber. Maening overweight unfit farangs, the disabled, bargirls and katoeys in high heels can't use them. They would have to be ramp style and I can't see where the room is. It would easier to issue us jetpacks than try to work out the logistics required here.

Sounds like they are taking care of themselved these City Hall guys..... they are also the owner of the only multi-storey car park not associated with a Mall.
