Thank you, if I were the religious type I think I'd be in chapel today saying a few prayers. More snow forecast here for tomorrow, just hope the London area misses out this week.

I live a couple of miles from Heathrow. I'd say we've got about 4 inches of snow on the ground now. Most of it came down yesterday morning and none has melted (or frozen thankfully) today. Local reports reckon runways, roads and car parks etc should be cleared building up a good service again over the next couple of days, though they reckon it's gonna be -8C tonight. The real concern is that more snow is forecast in this area for Weds/Thurs, albeit light.

 

I was at a works do at one of the big Heathrow hotels on Friday night, stayed overnight, it was chaos with all the stranded people camped out everywhere.

 

I'm not due out to LOS until Feb, but I'm booked on a flight out of Gatwick on Xmas Eve for a family visit. I think it really is in the lap of the Gods right now, fingers crossed for all of us...

Birmingham closed most of yesterday.

 

6" of snow, now it is freezing today's high -4C now the mercury is falling fast.

 

Things are bad at the airport, ground movements are slow with planes waiting up to an hour to get on stand, Emirates EK040 just departed over 3 hours late, not as bad as yesterday's EK040 that departed 25 hours late.

We have had the same amount as snow in the North West as the rest of the country and the 2 main airports Liverpool and Manchester have been running as normal except for a few delays and cancelled flights that go to LHR..............I hope this will be the case next week as i fly out to LOS.......Last year we go t stranned on the runway for 4 hours as they couldnt deal with the ice on the runway. Seems they have learnt the lesson from last year, its a shame other airports couldnt do the same.

Having worked at Heathrow, I wonder how much of these disruptions, is down to Health & Safety ? When I think of the things we did back in the 80's to keep things on the move.... a ramp guy once walked out onto the wings of the BWIA flight with a rope around his waist and three bloke holding the end, to sweep snow off. Can you imagine that now ?

 

On this snowfall day, BA canceled all flights at LHR. Why ALL ? The Gaffer of the BAA, was live on TV in the snow at it's worst, with aircraft taking off, saying that the airport was operational.

 

When pressed for an answer to why BA was the only airline to cancel all flights, he wouldn't comment.

 

The aprons around the aircraft are the first to get dangerous, due to the weight of the equipment unloading the aircraft, the snow gets compacted, it gets like an ice rink very quickly. Salt is a no no, due to its close proximity to the aircraft- particularly engine intakes.

 

We used to have old diesel tractors, with four rear wheels that would pull a train. Now it is all electric tugs for baggage, with two rear wheels that couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding in the snow.

 

I can imagine the conversations in the BA rest rooms " Blimey mate, cold out there innit ? You want us to go and load in the ice and snow ? What if I hurt meself innit. Can I sue the company ?

Heathrow update:

 

I've just been over to Heathrow seeing someone off.

 

Flights are going now, longhaul flights seem to be getting priority, especially on BA, and it seemed to me almost all longhauls were getting away or scheduled. The snow on the ground actually melted slightly today, the forecast snow for rush hour this evening didn't happen, warmer weather is forecast the next two days.

 

The balance of probability is that you'll get away ok from now on, as long as your plane is in the right place. They are saying all the dislocation should be sorted in the next 48-72 hours. Still a lot of people crashed out around the place though.

joekicker, all I was doing was reporting exactly what the METAR for EGKK (Gatwick) was reporting and that was SNOCLO = closed due to snow.

 

I am an air traffic controller and watch the 30 minute weather reports regularly to see what is in for me when I go to work.
