Looking at the results so far in MM's recent poll 'Where do you come from'....I am amazed that there are not more Australians in Pattaya.....or Thailand in general.

The main reason for me saying this is because we are closer to Thailand than Britain or America....yet Brits and Americans dominate Pattaya in terms of numbers.

It is only a 9 hour flight from Brisbane to Bangkok.......I am unsure of the exact time it takes for Americans and Brits.....but I am fairly sure it is a longer journey?

I realise the poll is only a small reflection of the overall numbers......but Americans and Brits have double the numbers compared to Aussies. :chogdee

Why do you think this is the case....or do you disagree with the poll results being an accurate overall picture?

Cheers.

When you find your comfort zone in a foreign country. It's easy to do the same thing over and over. Especially if your having fun with little hassle. I come back to Pattaya frequently and do the same

Funny you should ask that question? I've been to the following:   Australia New Zealand China Singapore Malaysia Indonesia Japan Taiwan Vietnam Cambodia India South Africa Egypt Israe

Vietnam. Without a doubt French/Vietnamese mix. Absolutely gorgeous.

Well I have been to Pattaya 4 times since 2008, and interestingly, on the ground I have noticed mostly British, and only a token hand full of Americans....Every once in a while I meet someone from France, or Germany, or a Nordic country...a chunk of Russians, and Middle Easterners, but by-in-large, I mostly see British whenever I visit, but heck, "Make the World England" is alright by me! :chogdee

Direct flight from UK is about 12 hours.

Met and made friends with a few aussies out thier I would disagree with the poll - I think there are more aussies from my encounters over in Patts

Maybe it's just a case of they are as bad at doing polls as they are at cricket

:grin-jump

edit : P.S. didnt realise that is you ricky to start off with - congrats on post 100 by the way :P

Lets see, Americas population is 10 times Australia, that should suggest the amount of Americans will be 10 to 1.

So why does it puzzle you that there are at least double........

Sorry...forgot you are an Aussie.

Heaps of Aussies in Patts but more go to Phuket I think.

Large group of guys at work who keep going to Phuket because "they like it there" heard about Pattaya but for some reason can't be convinced to go there. They go for partying and pussy but don't want to listen when I tell them Pattaya is the place.

Phuket and the rest of Thailand is advertised all over Australia. Pattaya is not. People go to flight agents and book holiday packages but don't realise that organising themselves can be cheap as well.

Perth-BKK is 6.5 hours. I recently found Jet Star tickets for $530 return. That's fucking cheap and I because of it I talked a few friends into joining me :grin-jump

IMO Brits go in bigger numbers then any other westerners.

I'd agree with Wato. Bangkok and Phuket feature in all the thai travel advertising, don't think I've ever seen advertising for Pattaya at all.

Remember that Oz has a relatively small population - just a bit more than a third of the UK's. Also, you don't need to leave your country to get some sunshine - we Brits don't have that luxury :thumbup

It has something to do with the strength of the aussie dollar.Destinations that were unaffordable are now not only affordable but even cheap.USA is the current hot destination for aussies.Asia used to be the cheapest and still is but for maybe 30/40% more we can go to europe or Uk or USA.Maldives, hawaii used to be prohibitive for aussie but now are well within a reasonable budget. Expect to see less aussies in thailand, not more.

... and have you seen the quality of the women in England? It's a wonder there are not more Brits in Thailand.

I think you are referring to the indigenous female population. Fortunately, I live in London where the local population is diluted by beautiful, young East Europeans and Brazilians, not to mention tourists. :whistling:

I worked with many beautiful Aussie women when I was teaching in SEA. All far more pleasant than American women will ever be. So maybe that IS the reason. I am more suprised that so many Americans are visiting LOS. With less than 15 percent of the population having a passport anyway, goes to show how bad the women of the USA are.

About 1.5 per cent of Chinese have passports, but one heck of a lot more Chinese visit Thailand than Americans.

According to the most recent statistics issued by the State Department in January of 2011, the number of Americans with passports is 114,464,041 - say, 37 per cent.

I don't know how many aussies visit Pattaya relative to other countries' citizens.

Also no idea on how representative this board is of those populations.

Don't know how representative the poll was of this board's membership, either.

I would add, though, that Oz isn't really that close to Thailand. It looks like it on the map, but Sydney is a long way south of Bangkok. Much closer than New York, certainly, but only a few hours closer than London.

Interesting to me first time I did it - you fly from Bangkok and you hit Australia in about five hours. It takes ANOTHER five hours to get to Sydney or Melbourne.

If I recall correctly (not guaranteed!), a few years ago you were able to fly non-stop from London Gatwick to Perth.

At which point you're in Perth, still many hours of flight eastward from actually Australia (sorry, you tiny minority of Australians but there you are). There is a REASON there are buggarall flights from Bangkok to Darwin.

Families tend to go to the Gold Coast for the theme parks and a lot on the Eastern seaboard go the 4 hours to Fiji. And half of Perth goes to Bali or Singapore.

The following list is based on statistics from the Web site of the Thai Office of Tourism. It covers tourist arrivals in Thailand by nationality in December 2010. There were more arrivals from the U.K. (88,095) than from Australia (81,205) and the U.S. (70,774).
