I decided to be the shithead last night, so when something came up about christmas on TV I said thank goodness there's no Christmas in Thailand. Boy did I get a rise out of the little lady. I stopped celebrating Xmas eons ago and won't be starting now.

What about me...? 555

My wife has been a couple of months in Thailand and just returned to the United States. Her latest intelligence report: There are a LOT more Christmas decorations and celebrations (music, etc), and way better ones, in any Thailand mall than any US one.

Me too, all those years stuck in the Middle East at Christmas did that to me, vacation timings never allowed me to go home.

Now I arrange gifts using the internet and that is the end of it. Flights too expensive anyhow.

I have a very low key xmas here in Khon Kaen

I buy present for our young daughter ,this year its a nice bike

Ask my Thai lady what she would like ,she says a nic trip to hairdresser would be nice ,so thats sorted.

No presents for her mama and papa as i do give a little to them for a new year village party.

Go to my daughters school fri before xmas to see xmas concert which the falang teachers put on for the Thia students

As for me its great seeing my friends on xmas eve for a few drinks.

Also going for xmas dinner with my friends and their wifes/girl friends/children at a falang bar,so looking forward to this

Boxing day a another good day with my mates watching the football

In summary I still like xmas here in Thailand as great to get together with all the xpats here

Hi,

For the last 6 years i even find it hard to get a Christmas card in LOS. Plenty of new years cards in Tesco's etc. Same this year. With having to take the kids to school on Christmes day, and banks and shops open, it does not feel like Christmas.

Now New year, that is different. The Thai's hve three new year days they celabrate, the western one, the Chineese one and the Budda one.

This year xmas is on Sunday ,so schools i know are close, also banks will be closed ,but agree shops will be open.

Yes New Year is big in Thailand ,also the time never to travel from bkk as all roads will have traffic jams the fri before and the mon/tue after.I know one person told me he took 12 hours to travel from BKK to khon Kaen ,normal 6 hours

I was out with my lady in Big C and I happened to mention how funny it was to see Thais who are Buddhist out buy Christmas decorations etc, she said they are buying them for cowdow (new year), so I asked her why are they buying Christmas trees then if it's only for new year? :clueless

I thought the thread was going to be about when a Thai lady marries a falang with big money.

Im sure my lady knows i dont have big money now

As our xmas dinner in Khon Kaen at No1 Bar costs 299bhts this includes 1 glass of wine haha

Yeah, but there IS a reason, of course, and a darned good one - "any excuse for a party". There is not only the traditional Thai Christmas celebration but the traditional Thai Chinese New Year and the traditional Thai Halloween and the traditional Thai April Fool's Day and the traditional.....

Your lady doesn't feel she should have to explain anything so primal. She's right, really.

Thais on inventing holidays are like Russians on everything else BUT holidays - they invented it. And face it, Thailand filled with anything BUT Thais would be a horrible country, and the cities would be simply unliveable. Watched them in the floods, with Everyone helping Everybody, and helpers and victims smiling and just resilient as all geddout.

Christmas means nothing to me these days except eating and drinking as much as I can for two days. Unless I have kids I can't ever see me becoming interested in it again. The true meaning of Christmas was lost years ago and it is just a retail festival now. As with everything in the UK now it is all about extracting the maximum amount of money out of every individual stupid enough to buy into it. The Christmas market outside my town's biggest shopping centre illustrates exactly what is wrong with Christmas now - £8 for a pint of beer and a hot dog, which is absolutely ridiculous.

I will be at my brother's house with all the family for Christmas dinner this year but that is about as festive as I will get, I have no decorations in my apartment. The family decided they weren't buying presents for adults this year and only kids but I have decided I am still going to surprise everyone with presents and have spent £500 so far, I am not bothered if I get nothing back as that is the whole point of Christmas - it's more about giving than receiving. The Mrs has already bought me the globe I wanted for my present.

Christmas is a state of mind. I have not lived in the UK for over 50 years and still the tree is up, the fake snow is there as are the cards and I have fruit cakes to burn.

Its a wonderful excuse to spoil my kid and her kids. I know that a lot of people see Christmas as a downer but it is what you make it. Looking at it from a Thai point of view I would comment as follows. If I lived in Thailand and had Thai lady or familly I believe that I would fully join in with their Buddha festivals because I have always respected other religeons and beliefs and as sure as hell I would expect them to respect mine.

It's frightening isn't it? :o I promise to get in the spirit on the day. I bought some more presents today, no one can doubt my generosity this year!

Having spent48 hours scouring Nong Khai & Udon Thani for Christmas crackers I think that I am rapidly going off of the idea of Christmas - except in Nong Khai we have a big street party this Sunday for Christmas and another next week for New Year.

Thais do like to party and are not over-worried about the reason.

As we were decorating the house for Christmas (US) my wife asked if we would do the same after we move to Thailand. I told her no problem with a tree in the house, but no lights outside because I don't want Somchai and his friends to come over wanting to sing Karaoke.
