We've all read the comments at some point or another, Thais are this, Thais are that. So in Snopes style, what are the popular myths, and do they have any basis in fact or are they just establishing some sort of superior mentality in the writers' minds.

All Thai girls hate Thai men/are looking for a farang husband. False (At least in the south of Thailand).

 

So why do so many guys who are here on extended visas rent a prostitute to provide companionship? That's always the first question that springs to my mind when I read that claim for the umpteenth time.

 

I had cause to be interviewing some (40) TGs a while back about Thai and western culture and the questions were asked whether they would consider dating/marrying a westerner. A whopping 7.5% answered in the affirmative. When pushed and asked if they would prefer dating/marrying a westerner, the Yes vote dropped to one. My own (personal) observations are that pre-Thaksin lots of girls saw farangs as an escape from poverty, but that doesn't hold the same weight nowadays and the overwhelming number of TGs prefer to remain in Thailand as part of a traditional Thai family.

What social class were these women?

I had been told that Thai men didn't want older ladies or single mothers. Thus leaving older women looking for foreigners. I could believe that, in a poor country , men wouldn't want another mouth to feed. Not sure I believe the age thing though. Although a moto taxi guy asked me when farang men go with older ladies. He said they go for younger women.

And a bangkok taxi driver asked me why farang men go with women who smoke cigarettes or have tattoos ( maybe it was drink). It was definitely two things he was surprised at.

Would a thai man, other than one who was low in thai society , marry an ex working girl? I thought foreigners were TG's last resort.

No offence to anyone who has married anyone described. Probably just urban myths , that someone will dispel.

As to your myth No. 1, never had a TG tell me she hated Thai men. Never had one tell me I was handsum man either. Long ago, it took some effort to talk the ex into leaving Thailand. To the extent, that a TG isn't just engaging in sweet mouth to engage the farang, perhaps just giving vent to universal complaints by women about men.

2A--All issues will Thai police can be resolved with an unofficial donation. Okay I have seen speeding handled with an on the spot fine. On the other hand, we have seen accounts here of by the book dispositions including DUI resulting in a trip to the monkey house and court. The ex's teen-aged step-son was accused of being involved in an assault. The resulting process was extended and seemed to involve some concern for the young man's well-being. While I got a blow by blow of the process by long distance,there was nothing about delivery of a plain white envelope. I probably would have been hit it for the contents if there had been.

 

2B--Never call the police, they won't do anything and/or will jack you around. Don't recall any specific postings here by members of bad results after calling the police. On the other hand, recall a number of instances of members reporting interaction with the BIB and finding, to their surprise, that the police acted in an appropriate, professional manner.

Second/Third year University students. They came from all sorts of social classes/backgrounds (mainly from southern Thailand) - from the daughters of rubber tappers, to some who don't want for a bob or two.

 

And a bangkok taxi driver asked me why farang men go with women who smoke cigarettes or have tattoos ( maybe it was drink). It was definitely two things he was surprised at.

 

I've often been asked by Thai guys why farangs choose to go with the girls they do go with. They simply can't get their heads round it. Their attitude seems to be, if you can afford the best, why don't you go with the best. Maybe that could be Number 4 ...

Was at the police station a few days ago making a report (hit and run accident, an asshole reversed into me and then did a runner)and a couple of the policeman were discussing why farangs only come here to fuck their women (obviously aimed at me)........

 

They were kinda shocked when I replied in English that I came here for work but their women were a bonus...dumbasses did not know I can understand thai.

I get a lot of girls/ladies tell me that Thai men no good lasy and drunks. This from bar girl to hotel worker and tourist guides thats over nine years of travel around Thailand. Unfortunately the same can be said about the current 16 to 25 year old males in Australia.

Often over the years I've had to go to great lengths with ms long time short time to explain that the rest of the year I'm a working joe, gets up in the morning, go to work 5 days a week. That as well as the "I can't afford to sponsor you" rap, which invariably tends to come up somewhere after day 4 or 5, with however, some notable exceptions.

I think that a bit gets lost in the Thinglish ... From my experience, what the Thais mean is that "compared to them", all farangs are rich, or farangs have big money, "compared to them'. From their perception, it's probably true. The average Thai who busts his gut all year for six days a week can't afford to holiday in Europe or the US for starters.

That is not even close to saying ALL of them want to MARRY a falang. I've had a lot of them say the same thing to me. These statements are not coming from the top-end University girls who have been prepared their whole lives by professional class parents for professional class husbands. The Issan farm girl with a 6th grade education is not in the running for a Thai investment banker.

 

For that class of girl, yeah - lazy drunks are in her option set. and she wants to do better.

Did anyone claim they were? The poster spelled out exactly who they were coming from. She(?) made no mention of top-end university girls or Issan farm girls with a 6th grade education.

There are a couple of aspects to this myth. One you've mentioned already. Basically, Thai people only meet westerners who are affluent enough (or adventurous enough like backpackers) to make it to Thailand. If we made similar judgments based on the Thai people that visit the West, we'd probably put them into two categories: affluent and well educated and able to travel and hard working Thais willing to work while on a tourist visa.

 

The other side is when a Thai does get to the West, especially the States, they see homeless beggars and the cost of everything is much higher. This dispels the myth as it shows directly that all westerners are not rich and since everything is expensive, even a good amount of money doesn't have that much buying power.

 

When my wife got to the States, she asked why some of the people were begging for money as they were clearly healthy and could easily work.

 

It's just a case of "the grass is always greener".

I didn't pretend anything - you really shouldn't come out with such accusations. Because I've never visited Brazil, doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Likewise, because you haven't heard something, doesn't mean it hasn't been said to others. Maybe you should visit Thailand more often.

All over Thailand it was the same. First question: are you married. Parents brought me their daughters or nieces, plopping them down in front of me. There was excited anticipation and eagerness for this great opportunity, not reluctant "I'll do it if I have to" sadness. This is a kind of fulfillment that makes them feel wonderful inside and the girls will pull out all the stops to snag the dream of a lifetime -
