Rugby World Cup 2015

With England now out I wonder if the Rugby Leagues Superleague Grand final will get more column inches next weekend in the British press... Somehow I doubt it....

Didn't watch the match but I'd hazard a guess Sam Burgess gets singled out for criticism...

This appeared on Twitter shortly after the game finished

Can’t comment on the leagues game because I’m a Union guy. I had t stay up all night to watch this game and it was worth it. Don’t blame Burgess, the better team won. Big difference was in the scrum. Australia hasn’t done that well for a long time but this morning their scrum was great . Looking forward to matching up against the Welsh scrum next week to see how good they are.

Just announced there's going to be a play-off for 5th place.........It will be called the 6 Nations

I love these things......From the opening ceremony.

The RFL have brought in a marquee player ruling which will allow teams to sign one player not governed by the "Salary Cap limitations" imposed on the clubs. It's to try and stop the best players being

When it matters, the World Cups, the England teams aren't good enough to beat the Aussies in either code...

The Kiwis are coming over to the UK to play a 4 test series end of this month.. don't think we'll win the series, we'll maybe draw it if we're lucky

Well woke up.........

Decided it hadn't been a bad dream.

Deal with it atlas.

Yawned ......scratched my arse......dealt with.

Perhaps some of that team will play long enough to put things right.......But I doubt it.

Robshaw and others will deal with going out so soon this tournament, (first time England don't go through to the playoffs......first time a home team hasn't made it through)......... by burying it as deep as they can.

.....But I suspect even in their 80's there'll be moments when they look in the morning mirror and it all comes back and they shout, "FUUUUUUUUUCK!" and find that they've just ripped the sink off the wall.

Australia were fractions better......In attack, defence, and scrum. Those fractions grew into dominance. They deserved to win and did. No complaints. Good luck to them now.

Where the English players will forever kick themselves is the way they lost to Wales.

No shame or surprise in losing to Wales it happens often enough........But they shouldn't have lost that particular game.

But they did and they are out.

Ahh well....''appy days'

Burgess came on too late to have any real effect either way, although he appeared lucky to me, not to be sent to the bin at the same time as Farrell, for yet another "round the neck" tackle. He should have come on when May went off injured.

Well England have never overcome such a half-time deficit in Test rugby...........

Australia are playing well and now have tons of confidence........

Not looking good.......BUT.......If we get a break early on we can still win that half and the game.

Not a problem then.

Hi,

The Aussies won both halves, so you can't really complain. England looked more dangerous with Ford at fly than Farrell. There is such diverse codes of football in Oz, it's a credit to them that they have such a good rugby union team.

I would imagine that some of the England supporters will take comfort from the following. It has oft been said that a World Cup is unlike any other event and that in a situation like this the form guide is rather useless except in the broader sense. I am sure that the Japanese and now the English will agree with this. Also, the "All Black number two teams". Tonga and Samoa have had a miserable cup as well. New Zealand usually start favorite but they have been dumped out a lot more times than they have won so there is some truth here.

I didn't watch, but if anyone else did, can you please explain how Samoa lost to the Japanese?

I would have guessed that the Samoans would have just run the Japanese over -- even though they were ranked very closely. (Perhaps I'm just using Japan's rugby history and size stereotypes in my mind to color my opinions). I get that the Japanese have a number of "adopted" Japanese team members (and perhaps Eddie Jones is the real difference maker), but still.....

They play the United States next. I don't even want to watch out of fear for the Yanks getting toasted.

There are at least 5 "genuine" New Zealanders playing for Japan through residency regulations. That is probably more "real" New Zealanders than there are playing for the All Blacks. :P Japan more or less have to enhance their side this way, as the general physical attributes of their race do not allow them to compete properly. The game itself is hugely appreciated and supported by the Japanese due to the "teamwork" emphasis on the game, and the award of the next World Cup was long overdue. Hope I'm still fit enough to attend it there myself! The residency regulations still reflect the old amateur status of the game really, and are exploited by just about all countries, apart from real minnows and Argentina (both of whom tend to lose the services of their best players, less so Argentina nowadays). One of the best loosehead props in the world (when not injured!), Corbisiero who plays for England, is American.

Hi,

At this stage we should applaud all those teams who have got to the quarter finals. Japan deserve mention as well with 3 wins. What happened England ?

Yes I forwarded this to my old UK pal who now lives in Oz!

Of course he now claims to have been supporting Oz all along. :D

I managed to exchange my tickets for Ireland v France for tickets at Kingsholm for the USA v Japan match (due to constant pleading from "missus", who thinks the Japanese fullback is a very very "sexy man", but probably a "big butterfly" ) Surprisingly difficult, but a Gloucester committee acquaintance came good :thumbup A good decision though; Even though the match had far less significance, it was one of the best matches to watch, that I have seen: Certainly better than the previous nights' England walkover at the "wrong" Manchester stadium! The crowd, especially the Japanese contingent, were excellent and hilarious at times; and with the local Gloucester support colours being the same red and white all cheering on the Japanese you would have thought it an home game in Japan!

Going to both South Africa v Wales (Buddah knows who to support there! Two of my least favourite sides :yikes: ), and Oz v Scroteland on Sunday. Cheering on the Jocks there, but reckon it'll be a hiding to nothing.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the Aussies could well win it outright this year, and a "highly unlikely" failure by the All Blacks to reach the final is nagging away at me. Have just had a much needed few days off the booze recovering. At this age it isn't only the players that need "rest and recovery" time between matches ! :drunk:

Hi,

Extremely close match yesterday but you always thought that the Aussies would just scrape through. Very lucky though, and they played really poorly; and that is not disrespecting the Scot's game, which I along with most of the English contingent, were supporting. Both myself and the Australian I was sitting next to thought we saw an Australian "knock on" just prior to the unfortunate, but correct final penalty decision. Also Maitland's banishment to the bin for deliberate knock on was extremely harsh. Decent referees ask for those sort of situations to be shown in "real time" after the slow motion replays, and decide contentious issues on that. Joubert only watched the slow-motion runs and decided on that alone. The real-time replay that I have just seen on TV, confirms what we thought at the match, it should have just been a scrum for knock-on IMHO. Others will obviously disagree!

One of the worrying things for the Aussies is that the Scots loosehead managed to "break" their tighthead Sio. The loosehead Kepu did not look to be in a great state when he went off either. Their recent successes have been very much down to having a true world class front row for the first time in decades; ( Who will ever forget "Doughnut Dunning" at the last World Cup! )They will need them, if they are to win the competition, and possibly even to beat Argentina!

Hi,

I'm no rugby expert but I think the difference between the North and South is ball handling skills. The AB's all seem comfortable throwing the ball around and the Aussies scored some great tries yesterday, while the Scottish relied on mistakes to score theirs. Argentina seem to have improved a lot, attacking wise, since their admission to the former Tri-Nations. Ireland were short several of their best players and they might have done better if they had played but Argentina deserve their place in the semi-finals. I think this World Cup has shown the gap between the Northern and Southern players despite the Northerners having some top NZ coaches.

First class assessment of the game Fatboyfat - Have to agree with everything you said and as an Aussie I think we were incredibly lucky to get out of jail. Just a shame the result came down to another referee decision.

Looking forward to the Final tomorrow. Forecast is for 20 degrees and dry, Nearly November in UK!! (Might wear the one and only short-sleeve shirt I brought to fly in this time  ) Hoping that might open up the game a bit, as the finals are normally pretty dour affairs for the neutrals. Hard to see the Blacks being beaten, but one never knows, I'll be shouting for the Aussies anyway! The "missus" will no doubt be supporting whoever has the "prettiest" boy in the side !

Sold the tickets for last nights play off to a very appreciative pair of Argentinian girls (Sadly not "that" appreciative though :devil ) Not meant to do that, so I hope they got in OK. I have been finding back-to-back matches, well the refreshments part :drunk , a bit much lately!
