  1. A work permit does not give automatic access to an extension of stay. There are other requirements most notably a minimum salary requirement of 50,000 baht/mo. for a "westerner".
  2. Yes, I stayed at the 247 for a couple of weeks or so in late Feb-early March. I had stayed at the April Suites the first part of my trip and then went to Dubai to visit friends. As April Suites had no rooms available for my return dates to Pattaya I booked a few days at 247 using Agoda. I arrived at the hotel around 09:00 (23 Feb.) and was immediately given a room with no extra change for my early check-in. Room was fine. I think the hotel is about a year old and no problems encountered except for a dripping air con. I mentioned that to the front desk and was given another room without a
  3. Re latestays: It appears that the Wotif Group also included Latestays and Wotif has been acquired by Expedia. http://www.tnooz.com/article/Wotif-Group-reports-substantial-traffic-and-bookings-from-mobile-channels/ One site in India said Wotif has disappeared in their market and attempts to log on to latestays will redirect you to the Expedia website.
  4. Yeah, just saw this a few days ago. Now in Laem Chabang. Looks quite posh vs the old digs. https://www.google.co.th/maps/place/Dr.Belen+Medical+Clinic,+Bang+Lamung,+Bang+Lamung+District,+Chon+Buri+20150/@13.0419116,100.9256391,785m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!3m1!1s0x3102b92e4ecc9f27:0x7d003e29b9b0ce90 Adjacent to Princess Chulabhorn's College Chonburi which is some sort of "science school". She is originally from the Philippines so speaks decent English. Ten or more years ago I saw her for treatment of conjunctivitis and after a couple of visits with no improvement I went to PIH on s

  7. There's also a Laundry Express on 3rd Rd. that does dry cleaning (or at least the signage says they do). It's just before Soi 18 with a similar blue sign as per the one on Naklua that Jacko posted. I was in that hood today to get an INR done at the nearby Life Care Laboratory. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Pattaya,+Bang+Lamung+District,+Chon+Buri,+Thailand/@12.92003,100.876638,3a,75y,317.78h,91.05t/data=!3m4!1e1!3m2!1shU1T__N8za18n71pF7taUw!2e0!4m2!3m1!1s0x310295924d31d7e3:0xa97ff301a9bd10ff The one mentioned above on Pattaya Tai is on the S. side of the road just beyond Soi 16.
  8. This is mentioned on thaivisa. It is really for English speakers who want to learn to type in Thai, but it may work OK if she can read the English instructions or get someone to help her get started. They mention it works best using Firefox. http://thai-notes.com/typing/typing.shtml -redwood
  9. During my 6 years on Warfarin while in Thailand I only had testing done by conventional venipuncture. That would include Bumrungrad in Bangkok, Phyathai Siracha Hosp., as well as Pattaya Memorial and Pattaya Inter. on Soi 5. Has never occurred to me to wear a tag, though not a bad idea. -redwood

  13. Years ago a mate of mine from Scotland asked what a sloppy joe was and after I explained its makeup and that it was frequent item on school lunches in the US, he said that was gourmet food compared to the school lunches he'd had. -redwood
  14. Priceline owns Agoda, booking.com and kayak.com. In June they acquired opentable.com (a US restaurant rez site) for $2.6 billion - cash. -redwood

  17. You can sign on after your initial eligibility for Part B, but there is a late enrollment penalty added on to the monthly fee. And this enrollment period is limited from 01 Jan 'til 31 Mar, but won't take effect until 01 July. I did that as I had initially declined Part B when first eligible, but Jan. 2006 I had a heart arrhythmia (atrial fibrillation) and went back to the States in July to be worked up. I've known 3 or 4 people who have had surgery at Queen Sirikit and they've all been pleased with the care and outcome. That hospital does not have a heart center however. Queen Savang
  18. My Bangkok home when away from home for about 30 years, so it's sad to see the photos, though they are appreciated as well. Back in 1981 I asked an engineer in Dhahran where to stay in Bangkok and he said The Fed and after that I rarely stayed anywhere else. Lots of memories of the eighties coming back from Patpong and the Grace coffee shop in the wee hours and afternoons of many beers poolside with new found friends. When I next get back to Bangkok where to stay will be the question. -redwood
  19. One potential problem for an American returning to the States for medical care is where are you going to live while you're there? What will you use for transportation? Who will help you make decisions re potential treatment options? After 10 years of living the retired life in Thailand, in August 2012 I had to return to the US for surgical treatment of colon cancer. I had a daughter and son-in-law who took me into their house and helped me with all of the above questions and a lot more. Two years later I'm still living with them and it looks as if that's going to be a long term arrang
  20. Has Chaeng Wattana reopened? It closed in January per protestors blocking Chaeng Wattana Rd. and as of a week ago it was still closed as were many of the government offices in the complex. There was talk on thaivisa.com that it might reopen this week, but I've seen no announcement of that. This are two temporary immigration offices open in Bangkok: http://bangkok.immigration.go.th/popup_anounce.html -redwood
  21. Found a website from http://www.ddproperty.com which gives the following listings for Pluak Daeng: http://tinyurl.com/qdydx34 As mentioned I'd think living in that area you'll be needing Thai lessons - STAT! And from Google maps it looks like close to a one hour drive from any of the coastal areas. -redwood
  22. You can renew or replace your passport at any time. It costs £72.50 by post or £81.25 through the Post Office’s Passport Check & Send service. Time left on an existing passport is added to your new one - up to a maximum of 9 months. https://www.gov.uk/renew-adult-passport -redwood
  23. It looks different because it not same-same anymore. The Photo Guide is from several years ago. The Honey Inn on Photo Guide is now Honey Massage catering to tourists, mostly Indian and Asians I think. The current Honey Inn hotel is across from the massage and I think was at one time the location of the old hotel's swimming pool. You'll see it as a building under construction in the PG. More current is the view using https://maps.google.com/ There's a review from March on Secrets hotel section. -redwood
  24. "Acappella Abbey Road: Sixteen glorious minutes of isolated Beatles vocal tracks" There is some "bleed through" of the instruments from the head phones into the vocal mikes. Also there are a few "dead air" spots in the recording, but does run 16 minutes. http://dangerousminds.net/comments/acappella_abbey_road_sixteen_glorious_minutes_of_isolated_beatles
