350 British tourists cause near-riot at Bangkok airport

Recommended Posts

Typical low class Brit behavior. Doesn't suprise me at all they would act this way even though it's their own stupidity for not having emergency funds for occasions like ummmmmm EMERGENCIES.... :allright  :D

Like 'the last days of Saigon': Angry and stranded, 350 British tourists cause near-riot at Bangkok airport By Mail Foreign Service   BANGKOK: -- Hundreds of angry and frightened Britons left stran

Wow, you guys are really harsh. If there are 350 stranded passengers in the airport, there are probably thousands more in hotels. You are right, it is not the airlines fault that there was a volcano

This post has been up for over 24 hours and joeK has not pointed out that you can't say 'Typical' about a race of people unless you have met them all, or at least most of them.

Oh - It's about the British. That's why ! :allright

why do they insist that the airport is in the capital ?

it's in Samutprakarn, one Province SouthEast

The airline did not make the flights during the ash. They saved the fuel, food, paying a flight crew and other things.

surely they were still paying their employees, but yes the other cost savings would be significant

Savings !!!!

Unless the paid for passengers go disappear into another cloud of dust...they still owe them flights/refunds

And with all aircraft they eat money sitting on the tarmac unused

Your pants are on fire. JoeK pointed out that the whiners and whingers at the airport are a bunch of low-class, no-class complainers with no gratitude. JoeK didn't have to make any complaint himself about races, since no one tried to comment on a race or even a nationality that he saw. Even the dreaded packhike only said it was typical of low-class Brits - tasteless but not worth a boot from JoeK.

He did make a general statement about the British media, though. It was very impressive and accurate. Go back and read it, it's ever so educational.

Correcto, but the name of the airport is (New) Bangkok International Airport and the designator is BKK. So since the authorities have gone all Orwellian, I think a little literary licence by the hacks can be excused.

Airlines dont have a spare dozen aircraft sitting around 'just in case'.

The logistics involved with clearing this backlog must be a nightmare. Its unprecedented.

(except maybe for BA, they should be used to it)

Shouting and getting upset at airline staff? Well there is the term .. 'the squeeky wheel gets the oil'.

Dont think that works in Thailand.

Its quite simple, the Airlines cant put you in seat that doesnt exist.

Actually Jeff,we do,as do most major airlines at the biggest hub.Not a dozen widebodies, but several acft of various types.

From Delta's CEO,via company intranet:

"“I know we’ve all been watching the impact to the operations from the volcano in Iceland,” Richard said. “And we’re back to a full schedule to and from Europe, and we are even operating a few extra flights to help customers get where they need to go. It will be a while before all of the travel is back to normal.”

I was one of those agents who was shouted at for 28+ years.

Its not the fault of the airlines (for once I'm sympathizing with them). Wars, "acts of God" and the like are not in the control of airlines. These assholes still think they have an empire and if they scream loud enough the brown people will kiss their dood chumpoo.

Dreaded???? I would find it hard to believe that any member with less then 700 posts could be considered dreaded. Now those members with over 10,000 posts could easily be put into the category of "dreaded"......

Now, now, don't sell yourself short. You ought to hear what these guys say when you're not here. I try to defend you, but they never listen, mind-stuck buggers.

Thanks LTGTR, I am sure Delta does have spare planes. Huge airline and all that.

I am equally sure that Qantas doesnt. These things need to be in the air to pay for themselves.

They can jiggle their maintenence schedules to free a couple up but thats about it.

Glad to see our consular services putting down their sherry and helping out their people.

Hi,

As taxpayers I believe they are entitled to some help in a crisis situation. It seems if you are British there is no help available. What are these people for ?

Fair enough, but what crisis was there and what help was provideable?

"These people" are to represent the UK government and do whatever boosts British interests (at the pleasure of the government of course). The idea that they work for British citizens is actually wrong. It *is* nice when they do it, but it's not what "they are for." I would guess that the person at the airport was sent there to do a report on what the British mobs were doing at the airport and how things were going with them -- since there was no actual crisis in progress. Just a guess, mind you.

Thai has plenty of planes at the airport. Announce on a first come, first serve basis, irrespective of what airline you bought a ticket on We will fly you to London. Do the same for people stuck in London waiting for a flight to BKK. Thai turns the tickets in to the appropriate airlines for reimbursement. Thai may lose a few Baht on this deal but the PR will be priceless.

Maybe you missed it but I think I read somewhere about the really big cloud of ash that came out of nowhere and shut down almost all the airports in where was it? I'll have to look on a map because I think it's called Euro Disney. No that's not it. Shit maybe you know where it is?

Let's see, what help could be made available? How about a temporary small loan program be made available? Shall we say maybe 500 pounds payable in 12 months.

Maybe he worked in the hospitality/travel industry at one time :D

British tourists are notoriously friendly, good natured and polite until things don't go exactly their way. Then they are notoriously short tempered, demanding and rude to the point of violence.

I witnessed an AirTours/Thomas Cook "riot" at Miami airport that was pretty scary. Amazing how people will through chairs, scream and threaten when they have no hope whatsoever of winning the battle.

Due to a delayed flight, from Changmai connecting in BKK to Siem Reap, myself and five others where moved to the head of the passport control line by airline employees. I was threatened by a screaming lout. The yelling was somehow contagious and dozens of other Brits started screaming threats... to the point that security moved in.

Years ago I had my life threatened in West Palm Beach Fl. hotel by a fool who thought I could somehow get him reimbursed for a video camera that was stolen in Miami. It appears that in some parts of the UK Food and Beverage Directors are responsible for stolen electronics.

I could go on....

Americans tourists are notorious for lots of things, so are Germans, Indians, etc. etc. etc. Of course I picked out the worst examples I could think of and left out nice ones.... Generalizing makes for a better story. :D

Looks as though EC/EU is offering bailout mmoney to help compensate airlines for their losses.

Hard to believe. Europe doesn't subsidise. That is a well known, frequently reported FACT.

Did anyone notice that several days after this sensational story of panic at Bangkok International Airport broke, that the Daily Mail is still exclusive, that no other media has managed to match or better this story? So did I.

Join the line of socialism-drugged "it's not my fault" Europeans, then. Sorry, but to me a "crisis" is just a teensy bit more than being stranded somewhere with free food, board and entertainment.

Do British embassies do loans? I don't think so, but if they do, I doubt they STOPPED doing loans because of a volcano 10,000 miles away.

One wonders doesn't one. But I also am curious as to how many of these people lounging around BKK waiting for handouts have paid much income tax.
