I'm an Aussie and it pains me only slightly but have to doff my cap to those Kiwis, above and beyond so far and wish them well in trying to get through tonight.

I must say from the aussies point of view (very one eyed). We lost the plot against the krauts and just couldn't come back from that flogging.

A big thumbs up to the teams that went through.

A big finger to some of the refs.

If FIFA has a sense of humour they will appoint a ref from a Muslim country for the USA's next game against Ghana.

And the USA should win that one. Well done on avoiding ze Germans.

Priorities and all that. D

Indeed. Interesting time difference for North America - games are in the morning and early afternoon. The late matches are at 2pm New York time, that being the gold standard for time in the US.

Just a guess, but I'd guess in the US that interest in the game is approximately 2,470 per cent greater than interest in watching the game most of the time. The ratings for "ordinary" (non-US, non-Mexico, etc) games are about 5 million sets of eyeballs for the English broadcasts, apparently, very VERY roughly the same for Spanish. England-US was about triple that if I recall rightly which I may not.

My boy was watching on Armed Forces TV, he said the mess hall at the base he's at was packed, the joint when nuts when the goal was scored.

A lot of English (almost exclusively) people are way, way behind the times on news from the colonies.

.

We colonists don't get accurate news about them either. It is understandable.

This world cup is a re run of WWII

The French surrendered early. The Americans joined in at the last moment and England have to face the Germans alone ! :drunk

Oh and the Italians gave up with little resistance ! :poke

The US beat Algeria in the World Cup today. The US scored a goal with three minutes left to play. And get this, the ref completely forgot to disallow the goal.

Not wanting to get our American cousins counting their chickens or anything, but looking at the way the draw has worked out for the knock-out stages (play-offs for Confused in Rayong), the US is pretty well placed to possibly make it to the semi-finals (they are currently ranked above the other three teams (Ghana, Uruguay and S. Korea) in their quarter of the draw). Another plus is that they've got a decent referee in Viktor Kassai from Hungary for the game against Ghana.

Any predictions?

I predict I'll be busy for a while on the weekend. Do Not Disturb.

"Luck of the draw" indeed. Turns out winning Group C was potentially quite an advantage, certainly on paper. England do NOT have a walk up a gentle slope ahead.

Okay, all my predictions have been completely wrong so far, so I figure my luck has to turn soon.

Here are my predictions for the knock out round:

Uruguay vs S Korea: Tough call but I'm going with Uruguay.

USA vs Ghana: Also tough but I think USA has momentum. Happy now Hub?

Netherlands vs Slovakia: I'm calling an upset here. Slovakia.

Brazil vs whoever: Who are we kidding? Brazil of course.

Argentina vs Mexico: Mexico is really out of sorts this time around and Argentina is as tough as ever. Argentina.

Germany vs England: Sorry boys, Germany is sharp and England still isn't focused. Germany will win for sure. Then again with my record, maybe you should take my prediction as a good sign for the nation of shopkeepers?

Paraguay vs Japan: I was really surprised by Japan's drubbing of Denmark. I'm calling another upset here, Japan over Paraguay, thus reducing the number of guays in the next round to one. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Portugal vs whoever: Portugal.

That Ref is the only one I have see so far that isnt into histrionics and showmanship.

The Yanks are lucky if they have scored him.

Many officials in high profile sports seem to be of the opinion that the crowd are there to see them.

Along with congrats to USA..........I'd like to add congratulations to New Zealand, who leave undefeated but played the game as it should be played. True sports and gentlemen.

Got to repect the USA for achieving top spot in the group, and as Tom points out, the draw has opened up for them.

Who knows, maybe a few of them will start to take notice of sports the whole world enjoys. :allright

Another one. It's 2010, you know. How about live on the most-watched terrestial network, scheduled a year ago, before anyone even knew if the US would qualify let alone get to R16? Is that enough noticing for you?

The world, huh? What pissant pay-TV channel is it on in India, population one billion for the tiny handful who like soccer? Didn't do much of a job educating the colonials about their enjoyable game, the English conquerors.

Go America tonight, we will have you lot chanting robust football anthems at the opposition supporters in no time. 1luv

" Who are ya ? Who are ya ?...... " " Your support is Fuxhg shit ! Your support is fuxng shit !.... Sung to the tune of Men of Harlech.

I know it all sounds a bit crude, but it is fun at the time ! :D

American football ( soccer) will get the coverage it deserves and a lot of your supporters will get geography lessons at the same time. :D

Rob' Green should get some sort of award from Mr Obama. It was him who gave you that first vital point.

O.K Heskey should get one too, for not scoring a second goal. Both will be given a better reception on your side of the pond than ours. :D

Something in hard plastic and rounded corners, so it won't break when he drops it.

Poor guy. But he's a late addition on a very long list through the decades. My favourite (no surprise) is one William Buckner, a better first baseman than Green is a goalie, actually, but who will also be remembered for one non-achievement only.
