Three Years of Chaos, (if we are lucky)

Depends on the time of day you hit town. Midday you move through the construction zone going south without too much trouble.

:clueless I wonder how many lanes of traffic they intend to

put down there? looks like 4 max, but it is Thailand :dhorse

Well that would match the regularly usable width of Sukhumvit. I often feel it is a waste of a wide highway which is 4 lanes each way is wasted. Lanes are occupied by vehicle repair shops who have laid claim and wherever there is a noodle shop double parking will ensue.

It still looks to me that an overpass would have been easier, cheaper and faster to build. That's not even mentioning obstructing traffic for a long period of time and having to tear up the existing highway. TIT, folly or not?

Prior to the building of the motorway overpass, perhaps.

You said 'toll gate'...... is this tunnel going to charge for use?

I just don't see that speeding up Sukhumvit traffic!

Late 1 April joke. Actually, someone started a thread on TV about the underpass charging a toll. Well written and suckered quite a few into believing it as true, but then again TIT where the absurd can and does become reality.

The color, geometry, lighting and shadows of this scaffolding would make for some artistic pics if it was more accessible.

Not much to see on the south end of the site. Looks like they're beginning to dig out the approach.

Looks like construction has started on a new police box at the top of Klang.

Shouldn't be long now before the new pedestrian bridge is open.

IMG_1133.jpg

The workers on the south entrance were a little put out seeing a farang come flying by on a mtn bike. But I got my shots and quickly exited so all was good.

Great photos and report FBWY. I was talking with someone yesterday who thought the tunnel was scheduled to open next March. That seems optimistic and really only just over 2 years from when this thread started. Can't recall when work actually started but I do recall nothing much seemed to be happening for quite a long time.... it was getting equipment there and erecting barriers, and goofing around trying to make up their minds wrt traffic directions around the area.

I drive through it most Sundays in both directions and it seemed particularly slow progress yesterday. Vehicles coming in and out of the construction area, pavement construction along Sukhumvit, and about 15 coaches of Chinese U-turning and then queueing to get into Rubber World. Even when I used North Rd the other day I wondered why the Police have built a little tented area with a desk and chairs near the Gems Gallery which seems to serve no other purpose than bottle necking the traffic.

Oh well, when it does get finished they only have to move the equipment 2km up the road to the Tai junction and start digging there.

They're doing quite a bit of shoulder work on Suk topside. That work and the construction of the police box makes me think they just might make a March opening date.

Here's my first pic of the start of construction from 11 Jan, 2015, so not quite two years.

For those that would like a photo trip down memory lane, I've uploaded all my photos to Flickr.

Lot of traffic coming into Pattaya this afternoon.

Siesta time, salon time for the workers.

New pedestrian bridge looking pretty good.

Electric is still a bit close for comfort though.

IMG_1277.jpg

Access gates are closed, so no mtn bike ride today for up close and personal shots. Zoom will have to do.

IMG_1281.jpg

Can see light at the end of the tunnel for this project.

I know it's likely behind schedule. When is the latest completion date?

I read somewhere the expected completion date is Feb, 2017. From the state of the current construction progress they just might finish it on time.
