I've resisted the trend until this year, but can do so no longer. Can anyone recommend a "disposable" cellphone model (and where to buy it) for my upcoming annual Pattaya trip, with texting, that can just de-sim'ed and "donated" to some deserving young Thai lovely when I go? 'Should be cheap but do the job.

Most of the girls will be looking for a new top of the range phone not a cheap one,why not just buy a phone you want and keep it after your trip but maybe dump the sim card if thats your worry back home.

...one less electronic gadget to have to drag through US customs. ...and worry about losing or having stolen. Geez - have things progressed to the point where the BGs are that picky about freebies?

A good phone is almost the number 1 status symbol amongs TG's P4P or not. (having a stupid sponsor would rate ahead of that)

Agree, get a cheapy at Tukcom. Maybe get one that uses he same type of charger as your own phone from home?

I have been using my cheap 'thailand only' phone for 5 years. Its more handy than you imagine.

I am of the opinion the a thousand baht Nokia is by far the best choice. I have a fairly expensive Nokia smart phone and also a Windows phone with all the gadgets including GPS. I use a cheap Phillips phone that can text and talks great. I use the cheap Phillips because it has GREAT battery life. A phone is for talking and other than that nothing else is important. I like electronic gadgets and have four Garmin GPS units. Any of the four is much better than a do everything phone. The fancy phones are nice toys but as far as I am concerned, just a waste of money.

I bought the Windows phone for a trip to the US. It handily connects to WiFi and can get by if you have nothing else to check your email. I had thought the phone would be fine but ended up buying a net-book while there because of the small phone screen and keys. I have never actually used the phone GPS for navigating but it works fine and would do OK in an emergency such as getting lost.

A dedicated GPS, a net-book for shorter trips, a laptop for longer trips and a desktop computer at home works best for me.

Bought 2 new basic Nokias yesterday for 2 mates that have just arrived in town. Try the new area of the Major Shopping centre on 2nd road. Many Tukcom stores have re-allocated to here recently.

Phones were 1100 baht each with sim cards and 300 baht credit, nice lady even copied over all the sim details from their expensive phone on to the new cheapos. Took 20 minutes and 2 happy guys

If you have not got an old one kicking around the back of a cupboard ask your friends, Nokia is the best as it is the make that everybody knows how to use without a manual.

SIM card are "two a penny" even 7-11 sell them, best do your home work on what you want (cheep local calls, cheap international calls, able to retain number for next visit, cheap texts, best coverage for area visiting.) then buy the card that is best for your needs.

Yes, if you give to some of the more expensive girls they will look down their noses at you, but a sweet farm fresh TGF will appreciate it even if it not as good as theirs they will give it to their mother or other family members.

I was of the belief that the cheapest phone was fine for Pattaya trips till I saw some good photos and have since done some homework. I am seriously thinking of leaving my cameras at home and getting a 6 to 8 mp camera phone. The quality of these photos is as good as I need for travelling.

I had the same thoughts and bought a Sony Ericsson W995. However, there is no way that it is a substitute for a half decent camera.

'Just want to thank everyone for their recommendations & comments. 'Much appreaciated. I have my phones here in the US, but don't want the hassle of carrying an expensive full-featured phone (& contents) back & forth through customs. I just want as much funtionality as I can get cheaply and easily there on location. If the TGF can't use it, then I'll just can it. All I want is a game accessory.

Apologies (& a tip of the hat - you do a great job) to the mods for not iniitiating this in the right place.

Last November (2110) I purchased an adequate Nokia for 695 baht at Carrefour on Central Road. I went to a shop on South Rd (about 100 feet from Farang type grocery store). I could have go sim from anywhere but she was a nice lady that was willing to assist me with the phone. I'll go back there with the same phone next trip. I had a phone that could text english for less than 1000 baht all in. That is cheap enough to throw away when you leave town, I had room in luggage so broght it with me. Go to Carrefour and get a cheapie phone.

First trip bought a cheapie Nokia phone for 900 baht, but it was hell trying to text on it. 2nd trip brought my first iPhone 2G, jailbroke and unlocked it. Works great as I can store girls info and where they worked and picture as well as the number. Helps me remember who's who. Also have an app that translates English to written Thai that helps with communicating. Also carry a pocket camera with me wherever I go, still takes better pictures than any phone and easier to use for a quick snap. I keep my expensive Iphone 4 locked up in the safe until I get back to the States.

You don't need a sophisticated smart phone in Thailand, one of those 'cheap' Nokias will work just fine. Their call quality is excellent and loud. How you get around without a phone for teelack to call you is beyond me.

Hi

No specific model recommendations but both Tesco Lotus(on pattaya nua, about 10 mins walk from Dolphin roundabout on 2nd road)

and BigC(the supermarket, phones on upper floor) on 2nd road usually have some cheap models below 1000 baht.

Tesco had some for just 600 baht or so just a few days ago.
