Getting from LK Metro to the south
nkped replied to nkped's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
What about the performance bonus from the LKMBGA for getting Paps out of the area? -
Don't know about Halifax, but the the Essex and Kent Scottish Regiment is headquartered in Windsor, Ontario http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Essex_and_Kent_Scottish, so who knows? Perhaps Halifax has a special dispensation being in Nova Scotia.

Interesting, I had been a bit uncertain as to whether anyone played League outside of Oz.

Someone needs to suggest to the management of the Tahitian Queen that they offer a two for one drink special to anyone presenting a movie stub from Central Festival after 6pm--rest stop for those travelling to Walking Street by shank's mare.

I'm not really suggesting that this is really a factor, but without an IDP, how is a Thai cop supposed to know that a driver's license from Alaska or Tasmania is a valid document and one from Middle Earth isn't?

Getting from LK Metro to the south

I got a sufficient answer to my original question. It will be something to check in January. I won't be too crest-fallen if a baht bus from LK Metro doesn't go directly to Jomtien -
6 dead in Pattaya Ferry accident
nkped replied to Chris100UK's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Actually there is when the bad press from a fatal accident such as this starts affecting business. -
What's the best location in the LK Metro area to catch a taxi, either meter or songthaew? It's not too complex to go there from Jomtien, but something else to get back. I don't mind the walk to the school if I'm by myself, but suspect it might not impress a new friend.

24-Hour 7- Days a week Vehicle Breakdown Recovery
nkped replied to InternationalTraveler's topic in Expat Issues
Well, she told you it was the key. Did you ever determine whether, by the terms of the insurance policy, you were entitled to anything other than a phone number? I realize that's an academic question. Have to say that the story is a good anecdote to idle musings about the pleasures of wondering around the northeast with my own wheels. -
Never involved in hog production myself but knew people who were when I was growing up. A few years ago, a BM posted some picture of a pig farm in Thailand. http://www.pattayatalk.com/forums/topic/34328-a-trip-to-the-pig-farm/ It looked like an impressive set-up and would have involved a significant capital investment so who knows. A school classmate who went back to the farm after university said that in years in which everything else went bust, the pigs paid the bills. As an aside, my father had raised hogs before I came on the scene. I once asked why he had given it up. He said, basically, that it was too much work. As this was a man who didn't seem to have any fear of hard work, that made an impression.

Local media http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/20131030/delta-plane-makes-emergency-landing-remote-alaska-airstrip is saying that Delta diverted a 767 out of Tokyo Narita enroute to San Francisco diverted to Cold Bay, Alaska due to trouble with an engine. A Delta Air Lines flight traveling from Tokyo to San Francisco made an emergency landing in Cold Bay early Wednesday morning following a “possible issue” with one of the aircraft's engines, according to the airline. Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said Delta flight 208, a Boeing 767, made the emergency landing in Cold Bay, a Southwest Alaska community 634 miles from Anchorage. Delta said the plane touched down in Cold Bay shortly after 6 a.m. The plane was reportedly carrying 167 passengers and 11 crew members. Delta spokesman Michael Thomas said another plane was en route Wednesday morning to Cold Bay to retrieve the stranded passengers. Alaska Department of Transportation spokeswoman Jill Reese said the community of Cold Bay -- with a population of about 100 -- had come together to help the passengers. Most were staying in either the airport or school while they waited for the new plane to come, she said. Cold Bay is considered one of the commercial hubs of the Aleutian Islands. Its runway is over 10,000 feet long, making it the fifth longest runway in the state. EDIT: To correct my description of the routing.

Bangkok Trip Report, 21 Years Ago, w/ Photos
nkped replied to RhinoTusk's topic in Pictorial Travel Reports
Thanks for that link as I don't follow Stickman with any regularity. It was novel watching the Deer Hunter and when they got to the bar scene thinking, "Hell, I've been there." -
If you thinking of using Korean Air Skypass miles in the next year, you may want to look at their awards charts. Some of their requirements are going up for tickets issued after March 31, 2014. The one I saw that is of interest to me is that the mileage required to upgrade off-peak from economy to prestige (from North America and Oceania) will go from 75,000 to 100,000. Some aren't going up. It looks like it will still take 85,000 to get an off-peak economy award ticket and 125,000 peak.

Need advice from the Board. Bringing the GF to Thailand
nkped replied to mrstein's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Of course you have heard of working on the railroad--laying Thais. -
Do you have a link or can you at least point us in the general direction? There does seem to be an inordinate number of places advertising that they do implants which, I gather, is a pretty complex procedure. My limited experience with dental care in Thailand--two crowns and a root canal--has been good so far.

A long way from it being a serious question for me, but Udon Thani would have its attractions. It has a fair number of farang friendly amenities including a Bangkok Hospital franchise and an Asia Books outlet. Also, over the winter, it occasionally gets cool enough at night for a light jacket to feel good. Of course the trade-off is that in the spring, it gets hotter than hell. The scuba diving sucks, but Air Asia has direct flights to Phuket. If I was solely going for the view, it would be Nakhon Phanom. Looking out over the Mekong towards Laos is still one of the great visuals on the planet for me.

Makes me feel better for the rate I got from Dancewatchers on a one bedroom for a three month rental--more than that, but not that much more. My favorite studio wasn't available.

Is 30B worth a motorbike taxi knifing?
nkped replied to SmellyFarang's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
Just a general, biased observation. Guys on some of the PI boards seem very good at talking the talk. Whether they walk the walk I could be mistaken and would painfully regret it if I was, but I would not see the risk of three Indians getting physical as being very high. I had something vaguely similar happen once with one guy who was from somewhere east of Suez. I was at an exchange window and the teller was figuring out how much baht I would get for would get for whatever I had given her. I could see the guy in the reflection of the window and he seemed to think that since there was nothing in the tray, he could expedite the process by putting his money in it before I received my baht. By making myself wide (easy for me), I prevented that from happening. I think he was just being a pushy jack-ass, but I also considered the possibility he would try to snatch my baht and run. I figured that with a 40kg weight advantage, I would do quite well in a jostling contest to block the window. If I had entertained the thought that he might have been carrying a blade, I hope my calculation would have been different. In the end, I went on my way with my baht and no problems or physical contact and the guy behind me giving me a look indicating he thought I was an absolute jerk for delaying him unnecessarily. -
Worlds colliding: Russian girls in Pattaya
nkped replied to nickman70's topic in General Discussion about Pattaya
If you are age appropriate for a 20 something Russian girl, why not? I'm not interested in a Russian pro in Pattaya for a whole variety of reasons. As for non-pros, I can think of only one reason a 20 something Russian would be interested in me and that would be to get a green card--no thanks! -
