I don't claim to be an expert on Mexican food, but I am from an area overran with far more than our share of Mexican restaurants, owned and operated by both established and recent Mexican immigrates. It is easily available, obviously, and reasonably priced, so I eat it quite often.

I know good Mexican food when I taste it and what is served at Tequila Reef is not good Mexican food by any stretch of the imagination.

I'll go out on a limb here and say that the majority of people I've met who think the food at Tequila Reef is good, are from areas of the world that would indicate they have little to no previous exposure to Mexican food and, therefore, I think it would be fair to say that, perhaps, they wouldn't know the difference between Mexican food and that plastic junk food from Taco Bell.

You are correct on may points. Having said that I would argue Tequilla Reef has the best Mexican food I have eaten in Pattaya. Certainly some of their selections are better than others.

Overall John and Darrell do a good job. Usually a friendly atmosphere and a good place to meet fellow Americans.

Where can I find of a good mexican restaurant?

Mexico of course, but there are sooooo many! I'd recommend southern Texas, better. If your wrist is just a shade limp, you might like southern California.

allright

There are a couple of restaurants that pass in Bangkok, but only in the sense you can't get really good stuff. Best in my experience is in the Rembrandt hotel on Soi 18. I believe it's only open in the evening.

Thais don't like Mexican for some reason, so there just aren't any good Mexican restaurants. What exists is if you really like Mexican and need a fix. Better than Taco Bell, but hardly San Antonio or even Armpit, Nebraska.

There's a new Mexican restaurant on Thappraya Road - just past the Hanaman Statue and the Paragon Estate Agent's shop.

I've no idea what the food is like.

Any other Mexican joints to check out?

Big Al's taco stand: 2 locations (2nd Road/Soi 2, across from Big C and Soi Lengkee (Soi Dianna Inn)/Soi Buakhow).

There's another restaurant on Soi 13 near the Sportman, called Taste of Thailand, which serves up a pretty good fajitas. I had the shrimp fajitas there, and it was delicious.

When the time is right, I am going to open a proper Mexican restaurant in Pattaya, if Chipotle Mexican Grill doesn't beat me to the punch.

So true. The only thing I've had there that partially qualifies as decent Mexican is the breakfast burrito. My vote for "good" goes to Mike's up the hill past the RG.

Tequila Reef on soi 7 always works for me. You can order deliveries via Door2Door too. Chicken taquitos followed by an east L.A. burrito with roast pork. Lovely.

What he said.

I'm no Mexican food elitist, but if it tastes good to you...then it tastes good.

Mexican food in the states tastes nothing like Mexican food in Mexico. I assume that's the case with Tequila Reef too.

I have an easier time finding Thai Food in the states that tastes Thai.

Do yourself a favor, and visit Mexico first and find out why it tastes so good there. Then when you open your restaurant in Pattaya, you'll be serving authentic Mexican food. I don't know what it is but the biggest mistake here in the states they make first is the chips and salsa. It's always watery and too saucy. In Mexico it's not, strickly chopped onions, cilantro, and tomatoes with no sauce. They also serve Cerviche (fish) mixed with Salsa, which is great. I especially like when they use tuna instead of some other type of fish.

Tequila Reef has great ribs. I know that's not Mexican, but that's the main reason I go. Just down the street from me is Mikes which is good. Blue Parrot would probably be the cheapest pricewise of the 3 mentioned here.

Mexico is a big place.

Food in one part of Mexico is nothing like food in another part of Mexico.

Bug27, ribs are Mexican. There are many different styles of "costillas" served throughout the country.

There are probably hundreds of thousands of varieties of salsa, ranging from the type that eltib describes to that which is more smooth, like a puree.

On top of that, Mexican food served in America is a whole different species of animal. Furthermore, depending on the part of the country you live in (California vs. Texas for example), your concept of what Mexican food is will be quite different.

And just because a Mexican is cooking the food doesn't make it Mexican either.

I've not gotten the jonesing for Mexican food in Pattaya, as it seems a little incongruous, but I did see a few Mexican restaurants around, including the ones mentioned above, so there must be people who crave it.

Check out the Blue Parrot, Soi Pattaya Land 2, for decent Mex food.

And, personally, I AVOID Teq Reef. Bad service and food.

This is why we have to take things here with a grain of salt

(mate, not a windup, just facts)

I have 46 trips to los

30+ to pattaya

live in california, lived in Mexico for 10 yrs

at Tequila Reef

always have had great service

always have had great food

YMMV

I've eaten at the Tequila Reef a few times. The bottom line is that the food can be good or bad, depending on who the cook is that day. The frozen margaritas are good every day, though.

The Blue Parrot can be OK also.

I find all the Mexican places in town are a little different in taste or style. I think you can find good in all of them.

We also offer a fair menu of Mexican Nosh at good prices.

Unlike others here, I do, in fact, claim to be an expert in Mexican food. Haha... J/K.... :banghead

Although I do live in an area with probably the highest concentration of taquerias in the entire USA - no kidding! Plenty of sit down Mex places too.

I've been to Tequila Reef quite a few times because I usually stay right around the corner from there. It's decent. I like the pork nachos a lot. My Thai friend turned her nose up at them when they arrived but then after trying a few she pulled out her little notebook and asked me the official name for them.

Overall the food at Tequila Reef is pretty decent. True, it may not be the most authentic but at least they have the salsa, beans, cheese, and meat thing down. The margaritas are tasty too. :clap2

I've had really bad Mexican food in the UK and Europe - you wouldn't believe how bad. Salsa tasting like ketchup, soggy chips, etc. They truly know how to F-up this kind of food.

If you've been to Mexico you will know that the most common dish to the majority of Mexicans is simply a couple corn tortillas with some meat, chopped onions, and cilantro. A far cry from the Tex-Mex and the giant burritos known as "authentic Mexican food" by most people.

Indeed. There is a major difference between TexMex, CalMex, and authentic Mexican food. Personally, I love the taquerias in San Diego and San Francisco.
