Russians in Pattaya

I know that there are guys here that have a negative opinions of Russians. I believe that these opinions are, by and large, wrong. OK. Maybe my experiences have been limited. So I invite anybody with differing experiences to comment.

 

My first observation is that the vast majority of Russians coming here come with their wives and families. As such, they are not in the least bit competition for the the tarts in the bars that we all enjoy. They come because Pattaya is a relatively cheap place to shop, enjoy a beach, and a welcome relief from the harsh Russian winters. A second consideration: I now rejoice that a people that were before forbidden to travel outside their country can now do so!

 

But the most important I save for last. I had a Russian landlord in Pattaya, and never before have I been treated so well. I only gave him 10 days notice that i was leaving his condo. I told him that he had every right to expect that I

should pay for the 20 days that the contract that I signed with him would require of me. But he ignored the 30 days notice rule and refunded my deposit cheerfully. When I think about it, it is not too surprising. He is a businessman that has been recently liberated from the greatest evil of our times: Communism. So I should not be too surprised. Anyway, I would submit that you guys should be glad of the Russians that come here

Im sitting out past Koh Larn now on a boat with a Russian family. As with all of my Russian clients they are very well behaved and a pleasure to have on-board.

 

What you have been subject to is nothing more than propoganda, propogated by people who have no idea what Russia (or the old USSR) is or was about. Communism was so bad that when they started "democratic" elections, the comunists were voted back IN. The Russian people are a pleasure to be with and I for one am happy to see their increasing numbers in Pattaya.

 

The naysayers always come up with the "rude atitude" but try talking to a yank in a foreign languae (Thai is a good one to try here) and all you'll get is an ever increasing level of volume as they try to get you to understand what they want. HINT - doesnt matter how loud you yell, if they dont speak English you're pushing shit up-hill. The Russians have a similar problem in that MOST of the OLDER ones dont have any grasp of English or Thai so what many interpret as "rudeness" is little more than frustration.

 

As for the greatest "evil" of all time - ask the murderers who spat out that crap, then look into what they did to the USSR during the transitional time of the 80s - You may find iout who the real criminals in this world are.

Most of the Russians have gone home now, most of them were here in numbers Nov to April, staying away from the bleak Russian winter as mentioned earlier. There were a lot staying in the Condo complex that I'm living in down Jomtien.

They keep themselves to themselves and spent most of their time at the pool or at the beach with their families or small groups. Many were groups of women, with or without kids.

I haven't seen the slightest bit of trouble from any of them. Might see the occasional one staggering up the road now and then with a bottle in hand. Got to know one Russian bloke a little bit and he is very friendly.

God, you are such a complete jerk off. I have been living in Thailand for the last 9 years, and I haven't seen Fox news on TV even once. Next, I despise George W. Bush. His notion of compassionate conservatism is anathema to me. I'm all for compassion and charity at the personal level, but when the government expropriates some peoples wealth against their will to give to the poor, that is in my estimation as pure evil. To be honest I have never seen a Russian behaving badly in Pattaya in the last twelve years. They keep themselves to themselves mainly because of the language barrier. We hear these soppy rumours about their 'Mafia' but if it exists in Pattaya I've yet to see any evidence of it.

They would walk down streets where everyone was throwing water, and cussing people out for getting them wet. I saw one throw a beer bottle at someone that squirted him with a squirt gun. That was a big overreaction. This was on walking street on the 18th, there was no way he was going to make it to the end with out being wet from top to bottom. They seemed completely unable to just enjoy it, or accept that it's a water holiday in another country and they were going to get wet. I didn't see any join in and get a squirt gun of their own either. They came off as very unhappy people, that could not adapt to another culture.

Visitors to Pattaya of all nationalities strongly resent being soaked by mindless idiots. Drenching folk going about their business is not what Songkran is all about let alone being part of Thai culture. If a person, regardless of nationality indicates that he does not wish to have water thrown over him that wish should be respected and most Thai people will afford you that respect. I hope the bottle throwing Ivan's aim was good.

Twice in a 2 week holiday in pattaya I had 2 different russian woman try to bud in front of me in line at the money changer by throwing american cash on the counter impatiently expecting the lady to drop my travellers cheques and stop processing them , when the thai lady ignored the russians money and kept procescing my travellers cheques both times the russian ladies took their cash back and headed to another money changer as if their in some kind of rush i just dont understand that rude kind of behavior . Normally at the money changer people act in a civilized way by waiting in line for your turn , I got the impression they thought their US Bills should be given top priority over anything else

People are the same the world over some are rude and arrogant, some are respectful and polite.

 

I am going to Moscow tomorrow and then on to Kazan the day after for a week long visit to a client out there, i can guarantee i will be better treated out there than i will be if i was visting a client in the UK.

 

The only time i have witnessed rudeness from a Russian was queing up at heathrow waiting to go through departure, a Russian guy barged straight to the front and the woman behind the counter let him through without a word. Unfortunatly when he was reaching up to put his bag in the overhead locker my laptop bag slipped on my shoulder and caught him in the ribs

That's an excellent point. The Russians aren't into street-level crime. The future would be very dark for Pattaya if the African drug dealers, pimps and scammers get a real foothold. It's the ex-militia guys and not the Nigerians who are the worst. Late at night in Bangkok, those guys get pretty aggressive, especially the ones who are banged out of their heads on yabba.

In the days of the USSR, people had to push or they wouldn't get anything to eat. Even today, there are shortages of consumer goods in Russia. Standing in an orderly queue isn't a virtue in the society from which they come. But last time I exited at Swampy, the Thai immigration officers had a good idea. They made all the Russians stand in a queue of their own an wouldn't allow them to jump between queues.

I can't speak Russian, so I haven't exactly spent a lot of time talking to Russians in Pattaya, except for two girls once on a baht bus who were from Moscow and could speak English.

 

Anyway, I don't see a problem. The Russian girls are sort of interesting.

Sorry mate but I'm with LD on this one, if these people don't want to get soaked on what is Songkran, then they should avoid coming at this time of year. I got to the entrance of WS on the 18th, seen all the water throwing activities, shrugged my shoulders and proceded up WS stopping at various bars along the route. Did I get wet? Yes I did. Did I spit my dummy out and react with anger? No. Why? Because I told myself one thing......When in Rome, do as the Romans do! All night long I seen Russians, other Eastern Europeans and Arabs reacting violently to being soaked. In my opinion they should not venture out to these hotspots where water throwing is at it's most, they should sit in the hotel bar and be miserable there.

Hard to form an opinion of the Russians because the only one I have developed is that they keep to themselves.

I recall another one rather arrogantly telling a Thai how he came from big country and she from little place. But he was an exception, he spoke English.

They seem to soak up the free shows and behave frugally and haver been a godsend for the crappy hotels way out of town.
