As we've probably all witnessed many times, the girls will go with chaps who by most peoples' definition are nothing short of disgusting in terms of looks, smell, state of inebriation and behaviour. Even people who fit this description have no trouble in getting laid in Patts, but as we also all know, Thai girls are usually exceptionally clean in their personal habits and assuredly don't appreciate customers who resemble a sack of shit. Money talks, bar life is very competitive for the girls and they'll go through the motions, but as you get to know many of them better, they are not slow to voice their opinions about slobs.

For the most part (they're women fercrissake) they certainly notice and care whether a farang has taken a little trouble to be clean, smell ok and wear a freshly laundered shirt when he sets out to Shitter's Bar of an evening.

People will usually take you on your own assessment of yourself, i.e. your comportment, and while dressing like a sweaty slob may appear to go unnoticed and be accepted as part of Pattaya's rich tapestry, it says more at first sight about you as a person, and your self-image, than anything else.

IMO a clean, nice-looking shirt with either shorts or longs plus sandals (no socks, please!) is quite ok. Walking around shirtless outside the beach area is not, though I've seen it often at the Beer Garden and even when eating at the Pig & Whistle on Soi 7 on one occasion - unbelievable in those surroundings, yet nobody on the staff raised a murmur.

As another general rule I think wife-beaters (sleeveless singlets) are dubious around town in the evening too, though I admit to wearing one sometimes if it's really hot.

Just can't stand seeing some of these(usually) loud mouthed slobs clad in their sweaty Singha singlet, "proudly displayed"(it's all paid for ya know!) beer gut, scruffy shorts and flip flops. Usually

Not enough "tats" to e Brits, they must be Americans

I have to agree wit Joe here. In Pattaya you can get away with shorts and sandals However, Thai's are very class conscious. I know some will say, "who cares what a whore thinks" But every one you

I know some will say, "who cares what a whore thinks" But every one you come in contact with, isn't a whore. Those that are, would still rather be seen with you, if you are wearing a shirt with a collar, long pants, and shoes. It puts you above a farm worker, lets face it, they left the farm to get away from that. As much as you like arm candy, the ladies like it too. I can't tell you how many times I've been with women and seen a man that was shirtless, or wearing flip flops, and the lady saying that she was glad that I never dress that way.

Many times I seen posters ask how to meet a "nice girl" well, dressing like you aren't a farm worker, or flat broke is a good start.

Well I never knew that! I guess I never realised how offensive shorts are! :clueless

if Id have taken it off I wouldn't of become less friendly .

I agree but if you are aware that it is disrespectful in Thailand then why would you want to continue to do it?

No shirt, no service is a good rule.

I certainly agree there but I see this rule waived a little more frequently of late.

I find it off-putting and am inclined to move on.

Really! Yes, it's Pattaya, yes, standards get lower all the time, but you need SOME standard perpetesake. It may be me, but frankly people inside a business of any kind without a shirt, it's low class in my mind. Very, very few exceptions, like that bar in the middle of the pool at the Royal Cliff, say.

A very good reminder that not everything goes in Pattaya if you want the best experience. Thanks Ron.

Seems to me like you and JK have not been to the farm very much-if atall. I have been up to my wifes family home in Issan and they all wear shorts and by (the men) the evening and early morning-are all shirtless. Wearing a pair of shorts does not make you look like a farm worker.

This is a topic that interests me, as I live in a nudist village, have had many years working in Saudi Arabia, and like the parts of Thailand that I have seen so far.

In the naturist village in Cap d'Agde, as it gets chillier after summer, people often wear something "on top" during the daytime whilst letting the rest "free to air" - "how weird is that", as some of the textile local (wimmin) say (who wouldn't get their bazooms oot but love the nightlife) - there will always be someone who takes offence. If you are of a mind to be shocked, don't come to our village, or at least "shut your face",n'est-ce pas?

In Saudi Arabia, the sometimes blonde Mrs Cap (sometimes cerebrally also) was forever getting told to cover her head in Jeddah (not a city where this is normal practice, unlike Riyadh).

In Pattaya, Mrs Cap got herself some "titty-tops" made (nice-cleavage IMHO, made by a Thai lady, "husband-beater singlets" if you will) and she asked if she could wear them in Pattaya. I said yes, but made the comment that in the rest of Thailand (except perhaps Patong) it would be frowned upon. Into the first baht-bus on Soi Buakhao townwards and two Brit/Aus mongers are tusk-tusking from minute one at the sight, then at the market area two female Shark employees get on and want a feel...... score!

Respect at the right time and place, house rules is house rules, no hypocrisy allowed.

Above all, behave yourself (Villa was the perfect gentleman when we met, hands full of beautiful people and wearing a polo shirt).

Wehey!

Slightly off topic..... last time I was in Patts, walking along the Beach Road Promenade, I saw on several occasions Ruskie Birds on the beach with their tits out.

Not being a beach bum, I was quite shocked to see this.

For those of you that chill out on the beach, is it quite common to see topless bathing? Do they ever get asked to cover up?

Thanks G - hope we can "wait for the wonder" together in June.

I certainly hope not, There are enough blokes with their tits oot after all. I wonder if it would be the police who asked them as I suppose the Thai 'reserve' would stop Joe Public from doing it(?)

It makes no difference what you wear.

Money number 1.

You seem to connect these two thoughts. One is wrong, one is (mostly) right. They are two dots but you haven't connected them. Let's try:

It makes a difference what you wear, otherwise you will pay more money AND you still won't get the full choice.

Money is number 1 in general, but there's quite a lot in Pattaya you can't buy no matter how much you have.

If you look like, act like and actually are a reasonably decent person, you'll get a lot more choice for a lot less money.

etc, etc.

There's no place in the world you can't, literally, put xhit on your shirt and get laid, if you have enough gelt. That doesn't mean that money can buy you whatever you want. And of course, as you are itching to write, I agree - if you dress, act and are all class, you won't get much with empty pockets.

The tattooed clan in the wife-beater singlets and shorts don't irritate me as much as the speedo gang (often as obese as the wife-beater singlet wearers) who also seem to go shirtless and now wander beyond the beaches. Are they Ruskies? Last month I saw two of them trying to get into Tahitian Queen.

Outside swimming competitions speedos just are not a good look for any male and in the Pattaya area they seem to be more common in Jomtien but then again there are more shirt lifters there too.

I think the ozzies call them budgie smugglers, which always gave me a chuckle.

Yes shirtless men all over town now, even well back from the beach rd. And they try to get into the malls and other places that way, and frequently do.

It does seem to be a habit of the Russians, as promoted by their leader, but not restricted to them by a long chalk.

They really lower the tone of the place and stand out amidst the tarts in extremely short tight skirts.

In Pattaya I will wear shorts and some kind of collared shirt during the day and switch to long pants at night. If I was trying to make friends with a GTG in a store or restaurant during the day, I would go with the long pants.

Ah, you Brits, so understated.

Really disgusting. Like MM, I wouldn't serve them. If I had a mall business, I'd be urging all the stalls, kiosks and stores around me not to serve them. This is really worth a City Hall campaign, "Save the last shred of Pattaya dignity".
