Pattayanis Greek Taverna (off Soi Bukhao- Updated Aug. 8)

Recommended Posts

I have eaten here several times and i can highly recommend this place. The slow cooked lamb is a firm favorite and the owner is one of the nicest restaurant owners i have ever met.

Just cant recommend this place enough.

I've been eating too much meat recently, so I'm giving meat-heavy dishes a rest for a few days. I'll be back to try the lamb, but I'll probably try the moussaka first, maybe tomorrow. The Greek salad is awesome and I love feta, especially the high-quality stuff at Pattayanis.

Great report as always……..

Whereas the very name 'Seaside Restaurant' would have told me what to expect……..(and is in fact OK if you just fancy a greasing up), I do sometimes find myself in need of an oil-change at a decent plate smasher……!!

On what you say and Bigmick…...I'll give this one a go.

Evil….It may be hard to judge but do you ever think your camera and questions impact on the service, quantity or quality of food you receive? Do these owners wonder at your interest?

Are you remembered………?

Thanks again, Evil. I have also walked past this place a few times, but never dropped in. I have a Greek brother-in-law who would love to visit there, so next time he is in Patts, I'll be sure to take him there, at your advice.

I had the moussaka last night. It was excellent and well worth the 280 baht!

Layers of egg plant, potatoes and minced meat, subtly spiced and topped with a fluffy bechamel-type sauce the Greeks usually call "cream."

And then we got a couple of bouzouki songs from the owner. He also poured the diners complimentary glasses of Efe raki from Turkey. It tastes like ouzo, but is very smooth and packs quite a wallop at 90 proof.

It was as close as you can come in Pattaya to a real Greek taverna experience.

I don't think it has much effect, if any at all. Many restaurant diners photograph their meals, so that's not unusual. No one has ever said anything to me about taking pics. I'm just guessing, but I imagine that only a small number of restaurant owners care about, or are even aware of, posts on the Internet boards.

To my knowledge, only three restaurant owners in Pattaya (Wok N Rok, Tequila Reef and now Pattayanis) associate me with the name Evil Penevil.

Last night I had another good meal at Pattayanis Greek Taverna. I have a pent-up craving for Greek food as I haven't had it much since moving to Pattaya. Greek food is a personal favorite of mine- a ballet on the tongue, not a break dance.

I had the saganaki (fried feta cheese - 150 baht) and the kefte macaronada (Greek meatballs with tomato-basil sauce over spaghetti- 290 baht). My dining companion wasn't hungry and ordered just two home-made village-style sausages, plus sampling my meal.

The saganaki was delicious with a squeeze of lemon.

The sauce for the kefte and spaghetti was also great- very fresh taste.

The meatballs were crisp on the outside, moist and tender on the inside and subtly flavored with herbs.

The sausages were also good. You can't go wrong at Pattayanis.

Another good meal at Pattayanis Greek Taverna. A friend of mine from NYC and I had dinner there. Because the Greek salad (250 baht) was such a large portion, we split one between the two of us. My friend figured that at least four fully ripe tomatoes had gone into the salad. He was also very impressed by the feta cheese.

We both had the lamb mixed grill (350 baht), which was also a substantial portion. You can order various combinations, but I had the lamb chop, beef meatballs (keftedes) and chicken souvlaki. It came with the yogurt, cucumber and garlic dip tzatziki that goes well with grilled meat. There was more salad minus the feta and French fries as well. It was all very tasty and we struggled to clear our plates.

I'm glad we lost that struggle (the French fries and salad were mostly uneaten on my plate) because Yanis offered us a complementary slice of baklava and cup of Greek coffee at the end of the meal. The baklava was absolutely delicious and the Greek coffee went down with it nicely. Yanis makes the baklava himself and it's proper Greek style, with walnuts and almonds inside the layers of phyllo (or filo) and not too heavy a dose of syrup. The Lebanse and Middle Eastern-type baklava is often filled with pistachio nuts and swimming in syrup, a much sweeter and stickier pastry.

These are signs at the corner of Soi Bukhao and Soi 21 that point to Pattayanis:

How many burgers do you see, wac?

Hi,

Too many. Instead of visions, I will have nightmares after those photos.

It's not surprising. You definitely have issues.
