Look at this critter.

Apparently they have a rather nasty bite that can be quite dangerous.

 

Fortunately it was dead already at the bottom of my pool. At first I thought it was one of those large pods from a tree.

Had it crawled over my foot when in a living state I may well have keeled over without it biting me!

When I first moved upcountry, there were boys with sling shots who killed the large geckos called Took Gares. They sold the dead lizards to a stupid old man who thought eating them made him more virile. It so happens that a favorite food for these lizards are those ugly dangerous centipedes. I'm happy to say that the gecko population is now stable and we VERY seldom see any of those despicable creatures. Do your best to protect the large geckos.

The locals here in Erawan call those Tokays sort of similar in that in the Philippines they are called Toku.

 

They catch them on a noose attached to a bamboo pole and generally hunt them at night. There is a market for the tails in China.

I occasionally see one of these centipedes around the estate. Thais treat them with great respect, as a sting from one is apparently agonisingly painful and potentially dangerous - the pain lasts for days and nothing relieves it.

Well I am certainly glad the bugger drowned in my pool.

If I had seen that running around I would have gone into lock down!

 

Every now and again I catch a tookay, when they come inside and become a nuisance, and release them a few Km away. Last time I showed it to the postman and he told me they are good money as they are a delicacy to the Chinese. he didn't want it though. It scared the bejeebers out of a young girl at the Shell station so I chased her round the forecourt with it.

When I was in the military and stationed in Hawaii, we caught geckos and kept them in our billets. They would hang out on the walls all day in plain site but at night they would hunt European cockroaches that are so numerous there.

Caught this chap this morning, he wasn't keen on it, particularly as he came looking for the noisy female in my roof that is far to wily for me.

This fellow will re relocated a few Km away later. They appear to be able to change their skin colour .

I kill centipedes and the small brown scorpions. Contrary to the opinion that the big black scorpions are dangerous, it is the little tiny ones that pack a wallop. I don't kill the black ones. They are actually quite docile.

Yeah, they are the ones The Scorpion Lady has all over her at the Khon Khiao open zoo.

I found a dead small scorpion in my water bucket the other day, first one I have ever seen.

Just had a very close call with one of those bastards!!!! Was putting my foot in a sandal when it shot out of the toe hole and scampered off at a fair rate of knots!!! I'm going to be very careful in checking my footwear from now on!!!

Yes, you would have been in a world of pain had it bit you. Also had it been closed toe shoes like Crocs you would likely be in your local hospital now.

I started being a bit more cautious putting my footwear on at the door after I came across a toad in there.... the shoe ended up half way to next year.

Don't mistake frogs with toads. A friend of mine bought his wife a very expensive puppy. His wife loved that puppy. One day she caught him chewing on a toad. Of course she took it away from him but the next day the puppy was dead.

Yeah, my Mrs is horrified when I pick them up bare handed and toss them over the wall. They sit there on my lawn like they own the place!

There is actually a restaurant that has toad on the menu nearby (my Mrs insists it is toad and not frog), amongst other delicacies. I am informed they have to be prepared carefully to avoid toxic parts, akin to blowfish.

Getting sick of gecko poop... seem to be finding it everywhere!!! It appears as those quite a few geckos have seen our house as being a desirable location to live!!!
