Update; Yesterday I spoke to a Brit in the condo sales office of the developer who will be building behind the PBR (Centara). They're hoping to start the build in July 2013, so it SHOULD be quiet in the back until then. The Condo block will be about the same height as the PBR. The new wing build in front is well under way, planned to open late 2013. It seems well screened, so disruption in the hotel will be minimised as much as possible, I doubt if it'll cut the noise down much though. I'm back in May, so I've booked the PBR again. Even if you can buy insurance for a rental, what's the chance of a tourist getting a payout? An expat sure, but even at home these things take more time than you'll have here. The bike owner will want paid immediately, and once you've left the country it would be hard to reclaim that from the insurance company.

They can type in an amount and have the pump dispense exactly that. Sounds like they filled Martin's tank, THEN typed in an amount 200 Baht higher and showed him that. It makes the scam simple as all they have to do is pocket two 100 Baht notes and their "till" will balance with the fuel sales data from the pump. I was had several years ago with the not re-setting on a bike, it wasn't until the next day when it clicked - I paid for more than could have been squeezed into an empty tank. Live and learn.
