....... pedestrian controlled traffic signals on Second Road, that is. Yes, they're going up all along Second Road, and possibly other places (I have spotted one on the junction of Central and Beach Roads).

It will be interesting to see how the traffic flows once they start working.

All of those I have seen, all in Bangkok, they might as well have put a fake button. If they have any effect on the lights, I haven't figured out what. That said, light turns red, traffic generally stops, emphasis on "generally" and "pedestrian beware".

At 59 I cannot sprint as fast as I could a few short years ago - so, I hope so because as I get older my odds of crossing Second Road in one piece will diminish!

I remember the advice from the first trip to Thailand. Walk confidently at a steady pace and don't do anything unexpected because the taxi drivers actually do not want to hit you in that they would have to waste a lot of time talking to the police. :thumbup Don't know that I had the confidence to rely on that advice at the age of 24. Pretty sure I don't want to count on it at the age of 60.

Good advice. It may not help with the motorbikes though. When a car of baht bus slows down, motorbikes go around, with out slowing down and their vision is blocked. I watched a girl get hit by a motorbike taxi in just such a way. The baht bus slowed down to let her cross, the motorbike whipped around and speed up hitting her so hard that she flew completely over the motorbike. The Thai didn't even look back or slow down, he just went on his way like nothing had happened.

Pedestrian crossings would be nice. I have my doubts weather motorbike taxi's or the young kids with out helmets would stop for them. Maybe for a second, but with the number of Thai's I see running lights now, it leads me to believe that adding more lights, would just make more lights to run.

Traffic lights WOULD work. Just think of those lights as another way for the police to make more money. You can bet there will be police watching all the time.

Joe

Would it be correct to say that the existing lights are at crossroads so that, if the traffic did not stop, there would be an accident with another vehicle? That is rather different from stopping merely for pedestians.

I do not really care about their motivation but I do hope the BiB enforce the new lights.

I think they're a great idea, tho I doubt if the majority of bikers will stop

for them.

Usually!

But do beware if you're crossing in front of the 'stationary' traffic as thos doing a left turn are often allowed to ignore the red light.

the pedestrian xing outside royal garden is good for some entertainment. there is nothing quite like the look of terror on the faces of first time visitors who use the crossing when they realise that no one is going to stop and they are about to get run down.

Red lights at a junction are one thing, and even those aren't well respected.

Red lights at a pedestrian crossing where there is no cross traffic will, IMO, prove less successful.

I cannot see them working unless they are regulated. Maybe at the start they will be but how long will that last.

M/cycles all seem to have their own rules ie we stop for nothing unless we have to. Have seen too many people clipped by M/ cycles whist I have been living here. You have to educate the population first and it will take a long time to get rid of all of their bad habits

This was my reaction to seeing them being installed, Songtaows and moto taxis have been running along this road un hindered for years and as you say old habits die hard, i feel they will not be looking for them and just carry on as usual.

Even if cars stop, the bikes will just drive round them as usual, an accident waiting to happen.
