I first came to Thailand around 24 years ago, and it was by accident more than design. It had been on my list of places to visit, and I saw a cheap flight deal at the time and decided to go, alone. TBO, I remember arriving in Bangkok, and I absolutely hated the place, and did not feel comfortable. I got talking to some fellas in a bar and they recommended either Pattaya, Phuket or one of the islands to visit, and said that I would not need to pre book hotels etc

I didn't take their advise but saw Hua Hin on the map, only 4 hours away on the bus, so I headed for there. A completely different world, relaxed and laid back. Found a small hotel, and had a great 2 weeks there. I decided to return to Thailand 4 months later, but this time, I read up on Phuket, and also spoke to a mate who had been there. I arrived in Patong, which seemed a perfect combination of bars, sea and sand. I hired a motorcycle and took a drive to Kata and Karon, and much preferred what I saw, so I checked out, put my bag in a tuk tuk and found a really nice bungalow.

Was a great location, a few bars, terrific beach and some nice women. I would drive over to Patong maybe every third night for some more full on entertainment

I fell in the love with the place, and a few years later, bought a bar off of a friend I had made, at a very cheap price. I took a break from work but did not really intend on becoming an expat. Unfortunately, the drinking every day and the trappings of running a bar, was not for me, and I sold up. It was a fantastic experience though and one that I will never forget.

I finally exhausted Phuket, having made a few trips up to Patttaya, and in the end, that became my chosen destination. I have been back to Bangkok several times, and still, do not like it very much. Was OK for a couple of nights with mates, but Pattaya offers the best combination in my opinion.

I must say, that since being married, and having had countless trips to Pattaya, I think I have outgrown it to an extent, yet I still get that buzz when I arrive, and it is a sensation, not to be beaten.

Sorry for the long winded reply BTW, but just wrote it while I thought about it.

In 1970, I was tired of Germany and looking for a job abroad.

Looked around in Istanbul and Bangkok, discovered Pattaya, started to work in Istanbul.

I was young and nightlife was good in Istanbul, but I kept coming back to Pattaya :thumbup

I booked a two week package trip in 88 with my farang wife, 4 days in Bangkok 10 in Pattaya we stayed at the Amari Orchid at the time they had an elephant in the grounds, had a great time the P4P was not in your face, I was a lot younger then and the US fleet were in had some real funny moments.

One being I was tanned and had short hair, my wife was blond and tall a looker if I say so myself, one night I was asked by 2 of the American lads "Hey man where did you get here from" so I stated in the finest English I could muster "she is my wife I brought her with me" FAF they apologised and we had a right laugh and afew beers.

Went back in 2004 , the food is the best in the world the Buddism I like ... and the girls are not too bad either...

Funny 2005 Xmas trip 6 of us booked the same flight we got 2 days in the Amari Orchid thrown it, a lot had changed but it was weird going back there.

(Sorry for the threadfuck, but it all came back to me )

I must be getting old, because I dont understand the question? :banghead

You have got to use your brain sometimes on this forum. So let me tell you in a simple way the question is asking how you basically first discovered Pattaya.

I first heard of Pattaya from U.S. military guys in 1979 while working in Taipei. They said to forget the P4P scene in Taipei and head to Thailand. Pattaya was described to me back then more as a beach resort than a center for nightlife. It was regarded as a "break" from the intensity of Bangkok.

I was aware of Bangkok's P4P scene while still at university in the U.S. I'll never forget the line in the Playboy article that said, "if you can't get laid out of the coffee shop of the Grace Hotel, you can't get laid anywhere in the world."

I was looking around the internet for Thailand vacations and happened upon this board. I was thinking of staying on a beach somewhere and just relaxing, then after reading the TR's on here I was amazed such a place existed. I actually didn't believe the stories, and had to see it for myself. It took me 3 years to finally make my maiden voyage when all the circumstances in life fell into place. I've made 3 trips in less than a year, and will continue to come back until I get bored of the place, which probably won't be happening any time soon.

had an army buddy and a navy buddy that were "sold" on BKK, said I had to go P4P as good as it gets so off i go, patpong, NEP, cowboy, beer garden but my army buddy was great friends with a chiness guy who owned a bar on soi33 and so got to know some of the locals and asked about scuba diving and beach activities, got the usual Pucket answer but one guy mentioned Pattaya. All the soi33 girls said "no go to pattaya, only dark, dirty girls there"---i booked a taxi the next morning, that was '01, boy were those girls right!

I continued saying the first few nights in BKK then going down to Pats until they build swappy, haven't been to BKK since.

I was in Bangkok with a friend and the couple of girls we were with suggested a trip to Pattaya.

The lure of the beaches was too much....

I was in BKK with a friend who suggested we head on down to someplace called Pattaya.

On subsequent trips, I spent most of my time in BKK, but whenever things got dicey or boring in BKK, I'd head to Pattaya for a planned few days to get away.

I'd usually plan for a 3 day trip and end up extending my stay day by day, for up to 10 days, before going back to BKK. This was usually caused by not being able to get up in time for checkout, and deciding to spend another day.

All in all, I had a love-hate relationship with the place. I couldn't seem to get away, but felt I needed to.

I was first brought to Pattaya by a Bangkok bargirl, who told me she wanted to spend some time by the sea. However, when we got to the nice double condo she'd arranged for us at Yensabai, there was the most amazing coincidence as one of her fellow bargirls (from the now defunct Tony's Bar on Cowboy) was right next door in a single unit. Anything you can do etc. Very grateful to her though, in hindsight.

An old work mate came to live in thailand (on his way to the UK for a holiday and never got there!!) and he later came to stay with me in oz with his thai lady for a weeks holiday. Invited me over to see the place, so I spent 2 months travelling around then met up with him and his girl in Pattaya. I had no idea wot it was all about, and that was the end of me..... this was around 12 years ago.

I was to spend my first trip to Thailand in Phuket. I was to arrive the week after the tsunami struck.

My friend and I decided it was to soon after the disaster to vacation in Phuket.

I started googling places in Thailand and came across this strange website called The Pattaya Pages :whistling:

My friends who spent lots of time in Phuket told me not to travel to Pattaya as it was a shit hole full of brothels, but, they had never actually been to Pattaya.

I got lots of great advice and booked the Residence Garden. It was all down hill from there....

My ship landed in Sri Racha early 90s but we were met by a taxiguy who brought us to a massage place. I didnt like it.

Fast forward to early 2000s and I was a regular to Phuket and Bangkok. Made it a point to catch one of those Dance contest they used to hold. Then they came up with a dance contest between Pattaya and Bangkok and I caught the one in Carousel on Soi Diamond. Met the Mamasan and still friends today. She's with the Peppermint group now.

I took a bus from Ekamai after a few days in Bangkok and at the Pattaya bus termnal , took the baht bus to beach road. Stopped at Mike's and keept walking across till i came to Apex but for some reason decided to walk past it to Ice Inn.

I was out with some mates trying to drink my way through the break down of a long term relationship and a friend of a friend told me Pattaya was the place to mend a broken heart. Did a bit of research online (mainly on this forum) and after my first trip realised how right the guy was.
