Why is it that a lot of violence in Pattaya seems to take place inside or near a go go's? I've heard that Showgirls and Windmill in particular are to be avoided.

I never go to them anyway as I don't like anywhere where a door closes and you can't leave quickly.

Are these places run by thugs? What is the problem with them?

I have never seen any violence in a Pattaya gogobar.

But they are dangerous – you get addicted to them ...

Well, thanks for the replies gents. Maybe I should try one out just for once. Pattaya still a relatively new experience for me. I mostly go to beers bars in Soi 7 or Soi Dianna/LK Metro area.

I'd venture to say your chances of seeing or being involved in a physical altercation are much higher OUTSIDE of gogos. The reason for this is that gogos do employ security and they are under strict orders to not use violence against customers or the gogos will be shut down by the police.

Of course, sometimes, if the customer escalates or if the security guy is having a bad day, things get out of hand, but that could just as easily happen anywhere else.

The gogos and night clubs/discos have been put on notice that the police will not tolerate violence against customers, even if the customer is behaving belligerently. Several have been closed for long periods (even several months in at least one case) for staff violence against customers, and the fines are quite high.

Customer vs customer violence is rare as well, since, in an enclosed area like a gogo, the staff will put a stop to it before it gets out of hand.

I've seen one or two strange incidents in go go bars.

One time, some guy with what appeared to be a gun in a holster decided he was going to get up on stage and dance. One of the bouncers looked like he wanted to throw him out, but he was stopped by another bouncer. I guess they thought better of it because of the possibility that he had a gun.

Another time, down in Phuket, I was in a bar one afternoon when two girls were fighting to the death over a small tip that someone had left. They were throwing chairs and tables at each other. Someone could have died.

Go Go bars can be dangerous if you don't pay your bill. Of course most farangs are not that stupid.

In all the hundreds of visits I've made to go go bars in Bangkok and Pattaya, I've only seen one violent incident in a go go bar and that was after the farang manager had tried through conversation for 30 minutes to get the customer to leave. The customer had fallen in love with one of the girls, but she didn't want to speak with him. However, the customer wouldn't leave and in the end, the manager and door staff swarmed him and literally carried him out, with him thrashing wildly the whole time. Even then, he wasn't beaten.

I believe the bad rep for some bars came through incidents involving extremely drunk and aggressive farang, like football hooligans. I think it is largely a myth that Thai door staff beat farang without reason. Most Thai door staff have more tolerance than their counterparts in the West. I've seen much worse fights in bars in the U.S. and Europe than in Thailand.

Of course, I have seen several very drunk and sometimes argumentative customers escorted from bars in LOS, but without violence. I have also seen some heavy-duty fights in discos and nightclubs on a few occasions, mostly in BKK. Go go bars have been calm in comparison.

I guess you don't go to night clubs in Oz. Lot of fights and broken bodies there.

It is a lot more dangerous in night clubs than go-go bars.

The only time I ever felt vulnerable was in a Thai disco (the old XZyte, I think). When a singer performed a Thai patriotic song, the crowd joined in, singing with waving arms in the air, fingers in the "V" sign. They had morphed into a mob mentality. While that's the extent of what happened, it would only have taken the slightest nudging from the singer to say something disparaging about the farangs in the audience to have been attacked.

Real eye-opener about how easily it is to manipulate any audience - just look at Trump rallies, for example.

Its about respect.

Whenever you add testosterone with alcohol you are likely to encounter some guys who can't handle things and they will be shown the error of their ways. Even then it takes a fair bit of provocation before the Thai security staff get involved. Best plan is to make sure that you are not the one who is out of control.

I find that if you respect the girls, respect the mamasan, respect the other drinkers and respect the bar admin you won't go far wrong.

Do Trump rallies turn violent and are his supporters of of a violent nature? If so then it's understandable why he is not very popular with certain sections of the American public.

In the UK it's usually followers of the left that are inclined to violence.

Yes. In one rally, he actually goaded his followers to "take care" of a heckler (ie, he was attacked). If the politician was anyone other than Trump. he would have been criminally charged.

Well, I have to back off my position that there isn't much violence in gogos.

Tonight, at a well-attended gogo, 2 model dancers got into a fistfight.

Yeah Hillary would have quietly taken care of it .... the heckler would commit suicide the next day and not disrupt her again

In fact, I agree with you. I'm native to Brisbane and I lived and worked on the Gold Coast for many years also.

No, I don't go to the clubs in Brisbane these days, for safety reasons, it's a rip-off, and also because I'm not into white girls.

Yes, SEQ ( South East Queensland ) is ,in general, much more violent overall than Pattaya ever will be.

Surfers Paradise on GC is a dangerous place after 9 pm at night. Yep, plenty of fights, assaults, shootings are

no big deal on the GC either these days. Same with Melbourne.

Is that all down to drugs and Lebanese dealers? In the UK we all were led to believe Australian cities were fairly law abiding till they arrived.

Was it also testosterone and alcohol based!

Of recent years I have had two incidents that were on the verge of violence but in the end we simply walked away from it. One was a "Dangling smoker" I often run into these guys. They inhale and then dangle their smoke as far away from their face, clothes or girlfriend as possible and that is often under the nose of some innocent. I also moved the ashtray under his nose. Both my complaint and the ashtray move bought forth a string of invective.

The other was a guy sitting in a gogo bar with three empty seats and he was loath to share them. Seems that over the course f the evening he had been buying lady drinks and was holding onto the real estate should any three of them return at the same time and got horribly pissed that I wanted one of them.

I guess that both these were matters of principal for both parties but I simply take it as a bloody liberty.

Same for me and issues could of been dealt with by the bar ,

Putting the ash tray next to the smoker and finding you a seat ,

I was once in a curt mood and someone had left a burning cigarette in an ashtray under my nose, so I poured a bit of beer on it.
